A new 2.6.11 kernel was added, X.Org updated, and the PCLOS Control Center got an update to fix some configuration utilities. We added a new 'kdeusb' disk key setup for using the guest account on a USB key disk. The installer now checks to make sure you have enough space on the primary partition to do a complete install. The live CD received a full update from synaptic (80 plus RPMs) to bring it up to date. In addition we tweaked the boot up process removing some services that caused a problem with some nForce motherboards...." Here is the full release announcement. At long last, a new development release of PCLinuxOS is out. What's new? "KDE 3.2.2 is the default window manager with Fluxbox as an alternative for low end machines. GNOME 2.6 is available via synaptic after hard drive install. The live CD is based on a stable 2.4 kernel. Kernel 2.6.5 is available via Synaptic after HD install. NVIDIA 3-D, Java and Flash should work out of the box. ATI-3D is not supported in this release due to drivers not being available from ATI for XFree 4.4.0. 2-D support does work. We are exploring alternatives (XOrg) for the next release." Read the rest of the release announcement here. Download: pclinuxos-p7.iso (688MB); also available via BitTorrent.

MadPenguin has published the first ever review of the Mandrake-based PCLinuxOS, developed by Texstar: "Even with the flaws that I have found in my short time with this distribution, it reeks of dedication and insight. When complete, this distro is going to be huge. Why? The creator obviously knows what makes a great Linux distro and has put all of that knowledge to work for him. The desktop is fast, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. All of the applications work the way they should, everything is organized and well thought out, and the experience from beginning to end is smooth. Everything fits together like a quality puzzle." Texstar's PCLinuxOS has now entered its 4th preview stage: "I was going to wait until the mirrors synced up to post anything about it but the cat is out of the bag. Preview 4 ISO has been posted and should start appearing as soon as the mirrors sync up which should take a day or so. A lot of things need to be tested in this release." See the rest of the forum post for more details. PCLinuxOS is a community based non-profit distribution initially based on Mandrake Linux. Just think of it as Mandrake Linux enhanced by Texstar on a single bootable live CD with 1.5GB of desktop applications and the ability to install right to your hard drive with everything ready to work out of the box. NVIDIA drivers, Flash, Java, urpmi setup, and of course all the cool application updates by Texstar. Download: pclinuxos-1130.iso (648MB).
