The developers of Puppy Linux, a lightweight distribution which can be assembled to be compatible with a variety of parent distributions, have published a Slackware-based version of Puppy Linux. It is compatible with the Slackware Linux 15.0 and Salix software repositories. The release announcement shares key details: "S15Pup is built from a 'Puppy builder' system named Woof-CE, which can build a Puppy Linux distribution from the binary packages of any other distro. Each 'Puppy distro' built by Woof-CE is a distinctive distribution in its own right, with unique features. S15Pup is built from Slackware Linux 15.0 binary TXZ packages, hence has binary compatibility with Slackware and access to the Slackware and Salix repositories. It is available in both 64-bit and 32-bit versions. This version continues to be built on top of Slackware Linux 14.2, but it includes all of the upstream bug and security fixes as well: "Another stable release of Slacko64 Puppy Linux is out. Slacko64 Puppy is built from Slackware64 14.2 binary TXZ packages, hence has binary compatibility with Slackware and access to the Slackware and Salix repositories. Philip Broughton has announced the release of Puppy Linux 9.5, a major new update of the project's lightweight distribution with JWM as the default window manager. This is the first Puppy based on the Ubuntu 20.04 "Focal Fossa": "The Puppy Linux team is proud to release Puppy Linux 9.5, also known as 'Fossapup64', version 9.5. This is the fourth official release of an Ubuntu-based 64-bit Puppy. Fossapup64 Puppy, is built from Ubuntu 'Focal Fossa' DEB (64 bit) packages, hence it has binary compatibility with Ubuntu and access to the Ubuntu 'Focal Fossa' repositories. The Puppy Linux project produces a lightweight distribution which includes many graphical utilities in a small download. The project's latest release is Puppy Linux 8.0 "BionicPup". A forum post lists the changes in 8.0: "Built with woofce using Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver packages and various .pet packages. All the usual packages (many updated) - Palemoon, DeadBeef, quickpet, pburn, JWM, change_kernels, Gnumeric, AbiWord, MPV, Samba, jwmdesk, Geany, Simple Ccreen Recorder, mtPaint, dunst, Transmission, pkg, uget, osmo etc. Some new stuff: woodenshoe-wis Rox filer. Rox now has copy and paste! Compton compositor set up as default. Adds subtle shadows to windows and menus. Matching JWM, GTK2 and GTK3 themes. Claws-mail now has a tray icon. Philip Broughton has announced the release of a new version of Puppy Linux. The new version is Puppy Linux 7.5, code name "Xenialpup". The new version of the lightweight distribution is built using packages from Ubuntu's 16.04 "Xenial" release and Puppy maintains binary compatibility with Ubuntu packages. "Puppy Linux is small, runs in RAM, is lightning fast, very versatile and good fun! It has everything a novice will need while allowing full control to the experienced user. It comes in both 32-bit & 64-bit versions that can boot in both BIOS and UEFI enabled computers. The 32-bit version has kernel 4.4.95-noPAE for better compatibility with older hardware while the 64-bit has kernel 4.9.58 for better modern hardware support. True to Puppy Linux tradition both versions come with a full range of communications, productivity and entertainment applications as well as a wide range of the unique puppy-specific utilities and applications. Barry Kauler has announced the release of a new version of the Puppy Linux distribution. Puppy Linux provides users with a lightweight, installable live CD which strives to be easy to use. The new release, Puppy Linux 6.3, is built from Slackware packages and is available in 32-bit and 64-bit builds. "It has been awhile since the last announcement of an official release of Puppy Linux, 6.0.3 'Tahrpup', starting with 6.0 in October 2014. Mick Amadio, the coordinator for Puppy built from Slackware 14.1 binary packages, has brought Puppy to a new release, version 6.3. This is distinct from Puppy 6.0.x, which is built from Ubuntu Trusty Tahr binary packages, coordinated by Phil Broughton. Mick coordinated Puppy 5.7.x which is also built with Slackware packages. Barry Kauler has announced the release of Puppy Linux 6.0 "Tahrpup" edition, a minimalist distribution compatible with Ubuntu 14.04 binary packages: "We have another official Puppy Linux release. Since I retired from developing Puppy Linux early in 2014, keen members of the Puppy community forked my Woof Puppy builder, naming it woof-CE. Barry Kauler has announced that newly updated releases of "Wary" and "Racy" editions of Puppy Linux, targeting older computers, are ready and available for download: "Wary Puppy 5.2.2 was released on 18 November 2011 (also Racy Puppy made his début). Since then, there has been the usual feverish pace of development. We now have a significant upgrade, hence the version jump from 5.2.x to 5.3. Wary Puppy is our build of Puppy Linux targeting older hardware. Racy Puppy made a début at the previous release (5.2.2) and is 'Wary on steroids' -- identical except with later X.Org and kernel, to suit more recent hardware. Version 5.3 has a fairly small number of application upgrades, however there are fundamental changes at the infrastructure level, that is, the 'Woof' level - in particular, pervasive support for internationalization, plus a multitude of bug fixes. Barry Kauler has announced the release of Puppy Linux 5.2 "Wary" edition, a small, fast and very light distribution designed for old and low-resource computers: "This is a massive upgrade relative to the 5.1.x series. All of the base packages were recompiled in T2. Certain choices were made in T2 with the plan of seamless upgrading from X.Org 7.3 to 7.6 - that is, the default Wary system has X.Org 7.3, but it is planned that Wary can be upgraded to X.Org 7.6 by installation of a single PET package, and all applications will work before and after. This required some very careful configuration. The idea is to 'have our cake and eat it too' - X.Org 7.3 for old hardware, easy upgrade to 7.6 for newer video hardware. The plan actually seems to be working. As usual, huge changes yet only a small version-number change. Many bug fixes, upgrades, new packages." Barry Kauler has announced the release of Puppy Linux 5.1.3 "Wary" edition, a mini-distribution targeting old and low-resource computers: "Wary is our flavour of Puppy that targets older hardware. Version 5.1.3 is mostly bug fixes and minor upgrades to 5.1.2. There have been some significant improvements at the Woof level, such as a close-box on desktop drive icons and faster boot-up. New applications: Default Applications Chooser, Urxvtset. New utilities: picscale, pngoverlay, yad. I decided to stay with SeaMonkey 1.1.18, as 2.2 has a badly broken Composer module. Also, 1.1.18 is smaller and better suited to older hardware -- FlashBlock and AddBlock plugins are included to suit those on dial-up. A couple of projects that have been upgraded in Wary and are worthy of special mention: BaCon and gtkdialog. Despite the name, this is NOT an Ubuntu-based distribution, but an independently developed distro with support for installing packages from Ubuntu repositories. From the release announcement: "Puppy Linux 'Wary' is a parallel development to our other flagship Puppy, Luci Puppy, but with a different target market - older hardware. Puppies built with recent Linux kernel and X.Org may not work properly on older computers. In particular, some analog dial-up modem drivers cannot be compiled with recent kernels. Puppy Linux has been updated to version 2.11: "Puppy version 2.11 is out. Puppy 2.10 was the first Puppy to use LZMA compression for the 'pup_210.sfs' Squashfs file (the file that has all of the applications). We found however that it doubled the start-up time for each application, not very noticeable on a modern fast CPU, however very much a problem on older hardware. Thus, for 2.11 we have gone back to the standard GZIP compression. Version 2.11 is basically an improved 2.10. Apart from reverting to GZIP compression, this release has various bug fixes. The world's first live CD that allows users to save their data back to the CD has been born. It is called Puppy Linux and the first experimental alpha release is now available for download and testing: "So, how does it work? What you have to do is boot the PC with the multi-session CD inserted in the CD-burner drive -- thus, Puppy automatically knows which drive is the CD-burner, in case you have more than one CD/DVD drive. Then you use Puppy in the normal way. At shutdown, all the changed files in your home directory are saved back to CD. That's it. Next time you boot, all the personal files are restored." Puppy Linux 0.9.1 has been released. These are some excerpts from the release notes: Mozilla has been upgraded to version 1.7, with Skipstone as the GUI front end. Skipstone displays as version 0.8.4 however it is actually a hybrid of 0.8.4 and 0.9.3. The problem with Skipstone crashing when flipping tab-views is now fixed, however there are still some minor problems with tabbed-windows view. GTK applications in Puppy can now have anti-aliased fonts, courtesy of the libgdkxft package, and this is applied on a per-application basis. A new version of Puppy Linux is out: "Puppy version 0.8.0 released. Version 0.7.9 was compiled on a Redhat 8.0 system, and this version is completely rebuilt based on the uClibc C library and a custom root filesystem. As this version is a complete rebuild, there may be quirks that weren't there before -- let me know. To bootup from the live-CD, the PC must have at least 128M RAM and must have a hard drive partition of type vfat, ext2/3 or reiserfs with at least 256M free space. ntfs partitions not yet supported. Puppy will create a file on the hard drive partition in which to store your personal data -- if Puppy is unable to find a suitable hard drive partition, Puppy will still run but your settings and files will not be saved." Puppy Linux, version 0.7.9, has been released: "Puppy version 0.7.9 is uploaded. The ISO file is 44.2M. Release notes: This version is still 'Red Hat based', meaning that Puppy requires a i686 class of CPU minimum. Minimum RAM requirement is 128M, except for the new lo-RAM USB installation. There is now a script that makes it very easy to install Puppy on a USB memory device, such as a Flash card. Furthermore, the script has an option of a lo-RAM installation, which will work on PCs with much less than 128M -- a minimum has not yet been tested. This script is in the 'Utilities' menu." This is a new release from the Puppy Linux project: "Puppy live-CD version 0.7.8 uploaded. The ISO is now 41MB, and has the 'kitchen sink' in it, including Mozilla web browser and Scribus desktop publishing. Release notes: To run Puppy, just burn the cd-puppy.iso to CD and boot up your PC from the CD. This version of Puppy runs in a 48M ramdisk. Yes, Mozilla, Scribus, everything, the entire filesystem, is in the ramdisk, so no application has to ever be loaded off the hard drive. This means speed, speed, speed! Puppy so far has been developed on a Redhat 8.0 host, however I am now going to investigate rebuilding Puppy from scratch using Slackware 9.1. Slackware is designed to run on a minimum 586 class CPU. Also, I plan to design Puppy to run on PCs with very little RAM, as little as 32M. I'm reluctant to predict anything, as this is basically a fun project and I follow whims, but roughly this is what to expect in the next release." See the complete release announcement. Puppy Linux has been updated to version 0.7.4. From the release notes: "Upgrading from a previous version, delete .etc folder and .fvwm95rc. If you wish to connect to the Internet by dial-up analog modem, please unplug any Ethernet network cable, as Puppy senses its presence during boot-up. Puppy now has DHCP and Samba clients, so you can get onto a LAN and presumably the Internet (untested). Any feedback on configuring these most welcome! I have created a page with step-by-step instructions to experiment with connecting two PCs together, one running Puppy, the other running Windows: Testing Puppy-to-Win networking." A new distribution on our list, Puppy Linux can boot off a flash card or any USB memory device, CDROM, Zip disk or LS/120/240 Superdisk, floppy disk or from an internal hard drive. Version 0.7 was released today: "Puppy Linux version 0.7 has just been uploaded. The Puppy web pages need to be updated - allow me some time to sift through them. This is the 'big K' version, which has The Qt library v2.3 and two applications that use the library, Konqueror-embedded web browser and Scribus desktop publishing v0.6.
