CRUX
CRUX is a lightweight, Linux distribution for computers running on 64-bit x86 processors. The distribution is targeted at experienced Linux users. The primary focus of this distribution is "keep it simple", which is reflected in a simple tar.gz-based package system, BSD-style initscripts, and a relatively small collection of trimmed packages. A new stable version of ROOT GNU/Linux is out: "ROOT GNU/Linux 1.4 has finally been released! This is the most stable, well-polished version of ROOT ever released. The 1.4 generation of ROOT contains many major changes from the previous release 1.3. This is a small list of new features or other changes: ROOT now includes a much more advanced package system with many new features based on pkgutils from CRUX; the system installer has been updated, it fixes many bugs and is generally more stable; the latest stable KDE, version 3.3.2, is included; GNOME1 and GNOME2 libraries are included for compatibility with programs. However, the GNOME2 desktop is not included because it's hard to maintain and takes up too much space on the CD." Read the full release notes for more details. Download: rootlinux-1.4.iso (685MB).

Just a quick note to say that the recently released ROOT Linux 1.3 is now also available in the form of an ISO image - get it here: rootlinux-1.3.iso (579MB) or from one of the download mirrors. Apart from information found on the distribution's home page, check out this brief interview with John Eriksson, the creator of ROOT Linux, published by OSNews in October 2001: "Many people seem to think that Root Linux is a copy of Slackware, but that's all wrong. It was based on Slackware when I started developing it. Now there's not a single package from Slackware left."
