Debian Edu/Skolelinux is the Debian-edu's "Debian Pure Blend" distribution. It is aiming to provide an out-of-the-box localised environment tailored for schools and universities. The project has published an update in step with Debian 11, bringing new software and features to the Debian Edu distribution. "New version of Debian Installer from Debian 'Bullseye', see its installation manual for more details. New artwork based on the Homeworld theme, the default artwork for Debian 11 'Bullseye'. The Debian Installer doesn't support LTSP chroot setup anymore. In case of a combined server installation ('Main server' + 'LTSP server' profiles), setting up thin client support (now using X2Go) happens at the end of the installation. Generating the SquashFS image for diskless client support (from the server's file system) is done at first boot. For separate LTSP servers, both steps have to be done via a tool after first boot inside the internal network when enough information is available from the main server. Software updates: everything which is new in Debian 11 'Bullseye', eg. Linux kernel 5.10, desktop environments KDE Plasma 5.20, GNOME 3.38, Xfce 4.16, LXDE 11, MATE 1.24, LibreOffice 7.0, educational toolbox GCompris 1.0, music creator Rosegarden 20.12, LTSP 21.01. Debian Bullseye includes more than 59,000 packages available for installation." Further information can be found in the release notes. Download: debian-edu-11.0.0-amd64-netinst.iso (438MB, SHA512, signature, torrent, pkglist). |

Hot on the heels of the new Debian release comes Debian Edu/Skolelinux 9, a new version of the project's Debian-based distribution tailored to educational institutions, computer labs and school networks. Donald Norwood announced the release yesterday: "The Debian Edu developer team is happy to announce Debian Edu 9, the first Debian Edu / Skolelinux release based on the Debian 9 'Stretch' release. Debian Edu, also known as Skolelinux, is a Linux distribution based on Debian providing an out-of-the box environment of a completely configured school network. Immediately after installation a school server running all services needed for a school network is set up just waiting for users and machines to be added via GOsa2, a comfortable web interface. ... These are some items from the release notes for Debian Edu 9: Plymouth is installed and activated by default, except for the 'Main Server' and 'Minimal' profiles; Icinga replaces Nagios as monitoring tool; LTSP now uses NBD instead of NFS for the root filesystem; a Japanese translation of the manual is now available." Here is the full release announcement. Download (SHA256) options include a 5.5 GB file meant for USB devices as well as a single-CD "netinstall" image: debian-edu-9+edu0-USB.iso (5,578MB, pkglist), debian-edu-9+edu0-CD.iso (647MB). |

A new development preview of Skolelinux has been released. From the changelog: "A lot of time has passed since the last pre-release, and some bug fixes have been done. The biggest change is that we use new LTSP packages, which are built by Debian packages. Since this is more or less the same tool that is used with lessdisks, lessdisks is no longer on the CD. Also, to get more educational applications onto the CD, some of the developer tools are removed. There is no image for the PowerPC this time, I hope to get back with more info in that department later on." Download: debian-edu_sarge-i386-pr06.iso (699MB, MD5). Skolelinux is a Debian-edu project aiming to provide an out-of-the-box localised environment tailored for schools and universities.

The developers of Skolelinux (part of the DebianEdu project) have released a new milestone of their upcoming sarge-based release. This is the project's first release with support for the PowerPC architecture. From the release notes: "PreRelease includes an image for use on PowerPC. The image is only tested on a Pegasos PowerPC, and I would like feedback from user of Mac hardware. Lessdisks as a thin client solution; I didn't try too hard to find or build LTSP packages for PowerPC clients, but instead set up lessdisks as a working solution. The packages are also added for the i386 CD." Download the ISO images from here (MD5): debian-edu_sarge-i386-pr05.iso (658MB) and debian-edu_sarge-powerpc-pr05.iso (675MB).

The KDE Edutainment Project has published an interview with the developers of Skolelinux: "We have made a simple tool for user administration that we wrote as part of the project. It has been programmed three times, and now I think we got it right. The user administration tool is part of Webmin. We have also made an easy-to-use backup tool. School sysadmins also use two other web-enabled tools for configuring parts of the system. The sysadmins need to configure the DHCP server somewhat, depending on how they use the LTSP server. They also need to configure CUPS for printing. They can also resize the disks with LVM which is mandatory on a Skolelinux installation. I think there are about 5-6 tools the sysadmins really need to know. The other options are pre-configured." The complete interview.

The many little-known Linux distributions tend to get ignored by reviewers, so it's always a pleasure to link to a review of one of the "neglected" distributions. This one, by NeoLink Computers, reviews Norway's Skolelinux: "Skolelinux I'm sure serves it's purpose, and I'm sure it serves it's purpose very well. This distro is used in Norwegian schools and saves the schools money. I give kudos to the person or persons who got this project going and I hope it continues. As far as using Skolelinux on my box here however, I will have to decline. I know I can use the apt-get tool to update my distro, but with all the things that Skolelinux is missing, it would take too long for me. Also, having it not able to dual boot puts a bit of a damper on its functionality." The complete review with several screenshots.

Less visible but certainly not less important is the set up of LDAP, LVM, thin client server etc making maintenance of a very large number of clients a breeze. Save and run!"
