Justin Boffemmyer has announced the release of a new stable installation ISO image for Source Mage GNU/Linux, an independently-developed source-based distribution: "After some time in the making, the Source Mage Cauldron team would like to present you with the 0.10.0 stable ISO image. This is the latest stable ISO image release for installing Source Mage GNU/Linux. A short list of the major improvements: updated kernel (2.6.27.10), better support for newer hardware; use of udev during boot enables automatic hardware probing and detection; new text-only installer interface; LVM and RAID support; documentation for all ISO packages available during the install; fast installation. Also in the works is an x86_64 edition which will hopefully keep in parallel with the x86 one." See the release announcement and release notes for more details. Source Mage GNU/Linux 0.9.6 for i486 and PowerPC processors has been released: "'Guidance' ISO Release 0.9.6 stable PPC and x86. Our first stable PPC ISO release in a very long time. The PPC installer now has all the nice features that the x86 installer has. Main new features: a 'dependency' scheme that will make sure you don't accidentally skip a vital step or do things in the wrong order - you can still override dependencies if you really know what you're doing; spells get installed in the background while you are busy selecting options; software RAID support via mdadm." Read the release announcement for further details. Download: smgl-0.9.6-i486.iso.bz2 (205MB, MD5) or smgl-0.9.6-ppc.iso.bz2 (208MB, MD5).

A new version of the source-based Source Mage GNU/Linux distribution has been released: "After a few release candidates, the new stable ISO is ready! There's not much to say that hasn't already been said. I've personally installed 3 or 4 systems that are getting good use on this ISO. But if you've missed out on the other emails, 0.9.5 features: a new completely revamped installer; significantly newer versions of spells; was generated using a repeatable system (this is a big feat); is extremely cool! Download and convert your friends to Source Mage today! I'd like to thank the members of the Cauldron Team for all the hard work they've done making this ISO happen." Here is the full release announcement. Download: smgl-0.9.5-i486.iso.bz2 (174MB, MD5).

New ISO images of Source Mage GNU/Linux for x86 and PPC architectures have been released: "A new ISO has been released and for the first time, it's available on x86 and PPC at the same time. It has been built entirely with scripts using the stable sorcery and stable grimoire. Boot loader (lilo/grub/yaboot) configuration has been rewritten from scratch and has been tested with or without a separate /boot partition. Both ISOs use the 2.6.8.1 kernel. The PPC ISO takes care about loading the temperature driver to avoid overheating (and thus damages)." Read the announcement and this readme for further information. A new release of the PowerPC edition of Source Mage GNU/Linux is now available: "I am proud to announce the new release 0.9.2-ppc ISO. What's new since 0.9.1-ppc ISO? Using a 2.6.8.1 kernel; NPTL; native support of udev; works better; yabootconfig from the installer works properly; mkreiserfs binary is no longer missing on the ISO so you can choose to create a ReiserFS partition; more complete keymap selection; you can do a 'cast linux' and select 2.6.8.1 kernel version (it wasn't possible with 2.6.5-rc3-ben0). Please check the README in the download directory. Have fun!" This is the full announcement. Download: smgl-0.9.2-ppc.iso.bz2 (256MB).

NEW • Review: Source Mage and Onebase Linux |

"The concept of source-based distributions, where all software is compiled from source code locally for maximum control and performance, took off with the introduction of Gentoo Linux and its wonderful package management called Portage. But Gentoo, popular as it may be, is not the only source-based distributions; in fact it is not even the oldest. ROCK Linux existed long before Gentoo and there are other independently developed projects. Andrew Fries has taken to the task of investigating the often overlooked source-based distributions - Sorcerer, Source Mage GNU/Linux, Lunar Linux and Onebase Linux. His conclusion: try Source Mage and be prepared to be pleasantly surprised."

The Source Mage team is getting closer to the end of the long road towards Source Mage GNU/Linux 1.0: "Sorcery version 0.9.0 (RC1) has been released! Some cool new things in this release: new dependency sorting and 'invoke' (used to be 'skry'), a menuing tool for installed spells. A number of bug fixes, and some cool new aesthetics. Please update and test!" Read the rest of the announcement. No new ISO image has been put together, although installing from sourcemage-20020701.iso.bz2 (130MB) and running 'sorcery update' will get your system up to RC1 status. Source Mage 1.0 final is expected to be released on 31 October.
