Scientific Linux
Scientific Linux was a recompiled Red Hat Enterprise Linux, co-developed by Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Although it aims to be fully compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, it also provides additional packages not found in the upstream product; the most notable among these are various file systems, including Cluster Suite and Global File System (GFS), FUSE, OpenAFS, Squashfs and Unionfs, wireless networking support with Intel wireless firmware, MadWiFi and NDISwrapper, Sun Java and Java Development Kit (JDK), the lightweight IceWM window manager, R - a language and environment for statistical computing, and the Alpine email client.

Ubuntu Unity is an Ubuntu community edition which ships with the Unity desktop, an interface which was developed by Canonical and then continued by the community. The project's new 24.10 release features Ubuntu 7.7 and version 6.11 of the Linux kernel. "Ubuntu Unity 24.10 continues to use Unity 7.7, and has seen a move away from unity-greeter as a result of some bugs discovered only a short while before the release (after the archive freezes) to lightdm-gtk-greeter; we continue to use LightDM, of course (this bug also affected other flavours of Ubuntu that used unity-greeter atop LightDM). As with Ubuntu Unity 24.04, the 24.10 installation images use Calamares. We would like to thank Simon Quigley and Aaron Rainbolt for integrating Calamares with our existing Ubuntu Unity live session, and last-minute fixes for bugs reported prior to the final release." The project also supplies experimental build ISOs featuring the Lomiri desktop, though they are not yet recommended for daily use. Continue to the release announcement for further details. Ubuntu Unity is a flavour of Ubuntu featuring the Unity7 desktop environment, the former default desktop of Ubuntu. The project has published Ubuntu Unity 24.04, "Noble Numbat" which has swapped out the Ubiquity system installer for Calamares. "We've moved over to Calamares as the installer included in the ISO (similar to the Lubuntu and Ubuntu Studio installers on previous releases, if you've ever tried them, which for that matter, you definitely should!). We would like to thank Simon Quigley and Aaron Rainbolt for integrating Calamares with our existing Ubuntu Unity live session, and last-minute fixes for bugs reported prior to the final release. Now speaking of Lomiri, we're aware that for the past few years, a lot of you have been eagerly awaiting Lomiri desktop images. And well, for those of you, we have some thrilling news: the first 24.04 Lomiri testing ISO is now publicly available!" Additional information is provided in the project's release announcement. Links to the experimental Lomiri branch of the project can be found on the project's home page. Download: ubuntu-unity-24.04-desktop-amd64.iso (3,355MB, SHA256, signature, torrent, pkglist). |

Rudra Saraswat has announced the release of Ubuntu Unity 23.10, un updated version of the project's Ubuntu flavour featuring the Unity7 desktop environment: "Ubuntu Unity 23.10 'Mantic Minotaur' has now been released. Ubuntu Unity 23.10 continues to use Unity 7.7, which has undergone maintenance. Our primary focus for this release has been to gradually migrate away from Nux in UnityX, which is progressing well. Nux is holding us back from offering Wayland support without Xwayland. We were also pre-occupied with adding support for CUPS 2.0 in Unity (printing), which has now been pushed back by Ubuntu to 24.04. A Lomiri variant of Ubuntu Unity is also in progress, and was supposed to be released today. Unfortunately, some app launcher-related bugs held us back, and we’re unable to make it available for download with the release announcement, but we hope to be able to do so within the next few days." Rudra Saraswat has announced the availability of Ubuntu Unity 23.04, a new version of the official Ubuntu flavour featuring the Unity desktop. The new release upgrades Unity to version 7.7: "Ubuntu Unity 23.04 'Lunar Lobster' has now been released. It is the first distribution to ship Unity 7.7 out of the box, and brings many improvements to the table, including: a brand-new dash, similar to that displayed in the concepts designed for Ubuntu 16.04; a slightly bigger panel, that is translucent by default and looks much better in light mode; indicator-notification is installed by default, and allows you to see any notifications that may have popped up while you were away; the official widgets implementation, UWidgets, is now supported. And some changes: the Settings app's shell UI has been drastically improved; the launcher BFB is now half-transparent, and fits in with the rest of the default Yaru icons, similar to Ubuntu Unity's custom BFB for Unity 7.5 in 21.04." Rudra Saraswat has announced the release of Ubuntu Unity 22.10, the project's first release as one of Ubuntu's official editions. Ubuntu Unity brings back the controversial Unity desktop used by Ubuntu as the default user interface until 2017; it had plenty of detractors, but seemingly also many fans: "The Ubuntu Unity 22.10 has now been released; it is the first stable release of Ubuntu Unity as an official flavor. It introduces a new toggle from the panel to switch between the dark and light theme, and between accent colors. It also replaces all the libadwaita apps with MATE alternatives. The ISO image is much smaller, at 2.8GB. The RAM usage has also gone down significantly (around 650MB when idle). You can now install Ubuntu Unity on an existing Ubuntu installation by removing gnome-shell and other GNOME apps, and then installing the ubuntu-unity-desktop package (all the Ubuntu Unity packages are now in universe in the official Ubuntu archive, and no longer in a PPA). We're actively working on adding new features to Unity7, such as support for different refresh rates in unity-settings-daemon, and even replacing such old components and apps and the indicators with the ayatana-* packages. We are working on adding extension support to the Unity shell." Read the full release announcement for additional details.
