The Vanilla OS team have annoiced the second release of their distribution, which carries the codename Orchid. Vanilla OS 2 drops the Ubuntu base in favour of Debian and strives to provide a stable environment which can run packages in a variety of formates while also offering the ability to rollback changes. "Did you encounter a system issue and need to revert to a previous stable state? With Orchid, this is quite simple, if something goes wrong, you can select the previous state during boot. After logging in, Orchid will prompt you to perform a rollback, once confirmed, this rollback becomes permanent until the next update. When a new update happens, the problematic state will be replaced with the new version of the operating system. Why would you need to perform a rollback? Even though Orchid is designed to be stable and compatible, and its update system ensures the updates are only installed if they pass, and despite every update being meticulously tested by our developers, something can still go wrong. Having a recovery point is essential. For example, you might be using hardware that is not compatible with the update, which is a scenario we cannot fully cover (yet)." Additional details can be found in the project's release announcement. Download: VanillaOS-2-stable.20240728.iso (1,662MB, SHA256, pkglist). |

NEW • Development Release: Vanilla OS 2 Beta |

Vanilla OS is an immutable operating system. While earlier releases were based on Ubuntu, the current development branch is based on Debian. The latest development snapshot features several other changes, including a new approach to handling atomic updates: "The day has finally come, we are proud to announce the release of Vanilla OS 2 'Orchid' beta. Orchid is a complete rewrite of the project, aiming to provide a stable, secure, fast, and user-friendly operating system without compromises. We have reevaluated the project from its roots, incorporating the extensive feedback received with the first version. ... A Root, our implementation of A/B Partitioning, facilitates updates in an immutable system through atomic transactions between two partitions, ensuring a consistently functioning system. In Vanilla OS 2 Orchid, we introduced ABRoot v2, a complete rewrite of the project designed to be more reliable and faster. Transactions now occur through OCI image expansion instead of applying package updates, ensuring the system receives an exact copy of the tested image. ABRoot v2 brings additional features, such as the ability to dump the system state for support in case of issues, switching between flavors without data loss by changing the base image, auto-recovery of the ABRoot file system structure, and more." Additional details can be found in the project's release announcement. The new beta release (pkglist) is linked on the distribution's download page and requires a GitHub account to access. |

Vanilla OS is a fixed-release distribution based on Ubuntu with the GNOME desktop. Vanilla OS is an immutable operating system - the core parts of the system are locked down to prevent unwanted changes and corruption from third-party applications or a faulty update. The project has announced its first stable release, Vanilla OS 22.10. "Vanilla OS is not an ordinary Linux distribution; it is a project that sets itself many goals and is not afraid to put itself out there, proudly displaying its unique technologies such as the Apx sub-system, its own automatic update system, and ABRoot transactions. So many terms, so many promises, so much everything. But let's see together, in detail what the strengths of Vanilla OS are, the features that make it unique. Vanilla OS comes with its own sub-system.. ehm.. package manager, called Apx. Apx introduces a whole new paradigm in package management. The idea is to use your system only as a box for storing your files, leaving it clean of packages and limiting the risk of breaking due to incompatible, poorly constructed or conflicting packages. It achieves this by installing software inside one or more containers fully managed by Apx having restricted access to your system's resources while still being able to use the same drivers and display server." Additional details are presented in the distribution's release announcement. Download: VanillaOS-22.10-all.20221229.iso (1,728MB, SHA256, pkglist). |
