Robert Lange has announced the availability of the first beta release of the upcoming VectorLinux 7.2, a Slackware-based distribution with a choice of Xfce ("Standard" edition) and IceWM ("Light" edition) desktop user interfaces: "VectorLinux is proud to announce the first beta release of the 7.2 version of its Standard and Light editions. The release features Light a minimal desktop using IceWM and SeaMonkey as its base of operation. The standard version is Xfce-based with the latest Firefox as the browser. Both versions can be installed with our semi automatic GUI installer or via a text-based installer, depending on your needs. We feature all the latest Linux software from Kodi to LibreOffice, all easily installed with our GUI or text-based package manager. We are using the latest 4.4.14 LTS kernel for the best hardware support and system speed. Last note for the diehards - we are systemd-free." Here is the brief release announcement. Robert Lange has announced the release of VectorLinux 7.1 "Light" edition, a Slackware-based distribution featuring the lightweight IceWM window manager: "Vector Linux Light 7.1 is released and available for download. The 'lightness' of this edition is relative to our Standard edition, and is achieved by using the lightweight IceWM window manager in place of the Xfce desktop environment. You may also choose bare-bones X Window with just TWM. Otherwise the base system and installation experience is the same as Standard. IceWM is old school. It uses a manual approach, much like a stick shift instead of an automatic transmission. It doesn't change unless you tell it to. Configuration is managed by editing plain text files. To make things easier and get you started, some of the most common tweaks are also scripted and controllable by a GUI app. The target audience consists of those who like and prefer IceWM, owners of older computers, and users who want a minimal, yet functional starting point for their own creation. Minimum recommended hardware: an Intel Core class CPU, 1 GB of RAM, and 10 GB of drive space." Here is the brief release announcement. Download the installation CD image from here: VL64-7.1-LIGHT.iso (618MB, MD5), VL-7.1-LIGHT.iso (618MB, MD5). |

It took quite a while to build, but finally it's here - the brand new VectorLinux 7.1. A Slackware-derived distribution with Xfce and without systemd. From the release announcement: "The VectorLinux team is proud to announce the final release of VectorLinux 7.1. This release is the culmination of years of work to make our distro the standard which all others hope to achieve. We have successfully developed an easy-to-use installer that can be used in both GUI and text modes depending on the hardware involved. It requires very little user intervention to achieve a successful installation of the system. We have completely automated our internal package system so that all packages are constantly up-to-date and patched as necessary. The system is available both in 32-bit and 64-bit variants and features the latest linux 3.18.16 LTS kernel. We use the latest Xfce as our GUI desktop with Fluxbox as an alternative. The repository contains the bigger systems like KDE and thousands of other programs easily installed through the tried and trusted gslapt/slaptget package installer." We include Xfce 4, the GIMP, Firefox, CUPS, Exaile, popular multimedia plugins, and many other programs to maximize the desktop experience. Also new is an update to our very own installer; this was written from scratch and is a major improvement from previous installers. Robert Lange has announced the release of VectorLinux 7.0 "Light" edition, a desktop distribution featuring four lightweight desktop configurations with JWM, IceWM, Openbox and LXDE: "VectorLinux 7.0 Light is completed and released. The term 'Light' is relative. This 4-in-1 edition gives you the choice of several window managers, in progressively heavier configurations. These are layered on top of the VectorLinux 7.0 Standard base, so the expected libraries, toolkits, compilers and codecs remain available. For those who want a starting point for their own customized desktop, there is the 'Barebone' option. It is managed by the super-lightweight JWM, without much fluff. Netsurf, a small and speedy web browser, gives you access to the power of the Internet. Use the included build tools and package manager to download and install the programs of your choice. This configuration has been tested on a Pentium 3 with 128 MB of memory." Read the rest of the release announcement to learn more about the available options. Robert Lange has announced the availability of a new (and probably final) release candidate for VectorLinux Linux 7.0: "One last testing release, mainly because upstream had a lot of updates that I decided to take advantage of so we are not old before we are new. The biggest news is the move to the 3.0.4 kernel which adds new functionality and speed. We updated a lot of firmware so more wireless chipsets are supported. Software updates include Firefox to version 7.0.1, Cairo-Dock to 2.4.0, Mesa to 7.10.2 and updates to all the latest X.Org drivers. Those of you using Intel, NVIDIA or ATI graphics are encouraged to try a few games now with the supplied open-source drivers - you might be pleasantly surprised. We squashed a few bugs from the 2.1 release and are looking forward to a dynamic final release following testing of this last RC." Here is the brief release announcement. Robert Lange has announced the availability of the fourth alpha release of VectorLinux 7.0, a Slackware-based distribution for the desktop: "VectorLinux Core 7 alpha 4 is up and ready to test. Sorry to do this but I need to try out one more alpha before we start the beta stage. We had multiple problems with the 3.6 release mostly due to an upgrade to the installer's core system to accommodate the latest kernel releases. Hopefully the install will go without problems this time and I added a few updated packages like XScreenSaver, Grip to rip CDs and DVDs, and a few other core programs. Wicd, the network manager, should work correctly now. I added a few new twists to the overall theme of things, interested to hear any reactions. I know I have thrown a lot of releases at you lately but I would like the final stages to be pretty damn perfect so the betas and release candidates should be quick and painless." There is no gslapt or slapt-get as there is no real repository yet for version 7.0. We would like you brave testers to check for bugs, try building your favorite applications, etc. We have included a new set of plugins to do things like Qt movie trailers, the standard RealPlayer and MS stuff. Robert Lange has announced the availability of the first public alpha release of VectorLinux 6.0. It's main new feature? A graphical system installer: "VectorLinux Standard 6.0-alpha2 is up and ready to be tested. There are many changes since the first alpha release. The testers were pretty unanimous in stating that GNOME was not the proper desktop environment for the Standard edition and Xfce 4 should remain, with LXDE as the secondary choice. So with this release there is no GNOME and Xfce 4 has been reinstated as the primary desktop. We have spent a tremendous amount of time on the new GUI installer and we really need you to test that part as 80% of our effort has been on improving the installer. The GUI installer is not complete yet, but we need your feedback as to the present state of development." Read the rest of the release announcement for more details. The second -- and probably the last -- release candidate of the SOHO edition of VectorLinux Linux 5.1 has been released: "SOHO-rc2 is available and ready for testing before we go final. Lots of little fixes to tune up our default firewall with Samba, CUPS and hplip. The x-11 base system was updated to patch 4. Larry Gagnon's menu fixes are in. Joe1962's new vl-hot is in for USB mountable devices. The bootsplash was updated so the animation goes away correctly (still needs a little tweaking). There are some artwork updates to be done but overall looks good. XFce should be able to do its themes now and the default look of XFce was modified. So brave ones download, install and report back the results of your findings." The release announcement. Download: VLSOHO-5.1-rc2.iso (688MB, MD5).

The review is accompanied by a brief interview with Robert S Lange, the lead developer of Vector Linux: "Q: When did you start VL? A: I believe it was a cold night in the winter of 1997 when Windows 95 once again went south. I had looked at FreeBSD and Slackware, ultimately chose FreeBSD and got it loaded, compiled a kernel, then I was hooked. I spent about 3 months with FreeBSD but I wanted a more desktop-centric system than FreeBSD offered at the time." Read the rest of the review and interview at TuxReports.

PCBurn has reviewed the recently released Vector Linux 4.0: "So far, Vector looks pretty much like a standard Linux installation only lighter, right? Exactly. But what struck me wasn't so much the speed of application loading. Although boot time is quick, application load up is zippy, and loading into a graphical interface is virtually lag free, I've come to expect that from a hand tuned instance of Linux. What caught my attention with Vector Linux were the things that are missing. No messy setup process choosing to install package A, B, or C for the same function. No guessing at what would be starting when I rebooted the system. No figuring out what icons are for and what on earth some of the oddly named applications do, exactly. No system bloat of 10 different applications to handle any possible preference of what to use for a specific task. Just a clean, uncluttered 650MB worth of software, ready to go." Vector Linux is very close to perfection, but is still a bit rough around the edges and needs a little fine tuning. The most important part is that the foundation is there and it's solid. There is no disputing that Vector Linux is and will be a continually evolving, if not powerful, force in the Linux world. I have been a fan from the first time I booted into a Vector Linux system and I will always appreciate the work they do. It is one of the few distros that shows a solid direction, leadership, and the ability to withstand the test of time. I for one are going to stick with VL, but VL doesn't strike me as the ultimate Linux-for-everyone distro. I'd recommend Vector Linux as a learning experience. The author is most impressed with Vector Linux: "Vector Linux is rock-solid, and mega-fast. Especially when you consider that it, like Redhat is an i386 optimized distribution! Vector gives me most of the programs that I would normally install anyway, and it gives them to me without complaining at all about dependencies. Add to that the fact that Vector looks good with its anti-aliased fonts and system-wide integration, and you've got a winner of a distribution!" The 12-page story starts here.

MadPenguin reviews the newly released Vector Linux 3.2: "My experience with Vector Linux 3.2 thus far has been a great ride. Although I found a couple of bumps along the way, they were minimal and easily fixed with either common sense or a visit and a post to the Vector Linux forums. Their message boards are moderated by some knowledgeable, friendly developers who are always willing to help their customers and customers to be. Finally, I must say this: Like anything else that is open source, please buy a copy if you like it. Vector offers a minimal download edition you can try out (get it from any of their mirrors) to see if you might be able to call it home. If you do, buy a copy from them. Read the complete review.

NEW • Interview with Robert Lange, Vector Linux |

The tinyminds.org web site has published an interview with Robert S Lange, the creator and lead developer of Vector Linux: "Vector's popularity stems from the large base of old hardware users. All of the major distros have pretty much abandoned the old hardware users so I think I have a real responsibility to keep the Vector Linux option open to those people. Vector has really branched into two systems; one for the old hardware and one for the new hardware. As long as I can keep my sanity I will do my best to maintain both areas. The big distros are going great guns to hide the inner workings of Linux to lure the paying MS minions into a far better experience. This is all well and good, but I would like to keep Vector Linux around for people that want to learn their operating system and really get the most out of it at the risk of getting their hands dirty." Nice interview, see the rest here.

The ISO image of Vector Linux 3.0 released yesterday is now available for download: VL3.0dl.iso (212MB). I've given it a partition on my hard disk to see what Vector is all about. The installation is very Slackware-like except for some nice configuration tools. It includes two Window managers - IceWM and xfce, both of them are very light-weight so the system feels incredibly fast if you normally use KDE or GNOME. The Vector's web site claims that it will run on a machine with only 16MB of memory! You don't get much choice in terms of applications; only one of each kind is present so you get Opera for browsing, Sylpheed for email, AbiWord for word processing, etc. I do have the package list now, so visit the Vector page to see the list of included applications. Vector Linux is a very fast and light-weight distribution, so do give it a try; besides the download option you can also order the CD with documentation and extra applications for US$20.

Vector Linux 3.0 is out: "We are proud to release the 3.0 incarnation of Vector Linux. This is a big rewrite as we made the decision to go completely Slackware compatible and also LSB compliant. This gives us the ability to update as Slack does and keep up with security fixes and other vulnerabilities on a more timely basis. This still looks and feels like Vector Linux but the base is all Slackware and includes all of Slackware's configuration tools like 'pkgtool' so you slackers or ex-slackers should feel right at home. All the things that make VL unique are still there and the size only grew about 20 megs from last release of 2.5." There are no ISO images as yet, but these installation instruction will tell you what to download and how to install Vector Linux 3.0. These are the download directories: ftp or http.

Vector Linux 2.5 final is out: "The installation was a joy to behold, the program mix was perfect and God is using Vector Linux now. So with little trepidation we announce the release of VECTOR LINUX 2.5 final." You are encouraged to buy the official CD (US$20) via mail order as "Vector Linux is experiencing troubled financial times and our only source of revenue for this project is the sale of CD's" No ISO images are provided, but the complete package directory with installation instructions are available on the ibiblio.org mirror. The release comes in three flavours: as a base console system - veclinux.bz2 (40MB), as a graphical system with XFree86 4.2.0 - XF-4.2.bz2 (63MB) and as a graphical system with XFree86 3.3.6 - XF-3.3.6.bz2 (42MB). Unfortunately, I haven't been able to obtain the package list - Vector Linux is one of those distributions that make it extremely hard to get to package versions, even after installing the system and my direct requests to maintainers have so far been futile. Visit the distribution's home page and also consult the recent review by Linuxdot.
