The main highlight for this release is the expansion of 64-bit ARM support to new devices: "This release introduces support for several arm64 UEFI devices: Apple Silicon, Lenovo Thinkpad X13s, Pinebook Pro. Live ISOs for aarch64 and aarch64-musl should also support other arm64 devices that support UEFI and can run a mainline (standard) kernel. Additionally, this image release includes: Linux 6.12 in live ISOs; Xfce 4.20 in xfce-flavored live ISOs; Linux 6.6.69 in Raspberry Pi PLATFORMFSes and images; xgenfstab, a new script from xtools to simplify generation of /etc/fstab for chroot installs." The Void project produces an independent, rolling release Linux distribution. The project's latest snapshot provides a keyboard layout selector on the login screen, enables the chrony network time daemon, and supports Raspberry Pi 5 computers. The distribution's release announcement shares the details: "Some highlights of this release: A keymap selector is now shown in LightDM on XFCE images. The chrony NTP daemon is now enabled by default in live images. Raspberry Pi images can now be installed on non-SD card storage without manual configuration on models that support booting from USB or NVMe. Raspberry Pi images now default to a /boot partition of 256MiB instead of 64MiB. rpi-aarch64* PLATFORMFSes and images now support the Raspberry Pi 5. After installation, the kernel can be switched to the Raspberry Pi 5-specific rpi5-kernel." Void is available in glibc and musl C library editions. The Void team have announced a new snapshot of their rolling release distribution. Void features an unusual combination of init (runit), package manager (XBPS), and multiple options for C libraries. The project's release announcement reports: "Some highlights of this release: Installing using the network source no longer fails to create the non-root user. The xbps mirror can now be selected in the installer using xmirror. The Xfce live ISO now uses LightDM. GRUB will no longer fail to be installed in some partition layouts/orders. Various improvements to the installer. Xfce live ISOs now use PipeWire for audio, and base ISOs now include ALSA. Live ISOs now include several new boot options, including screenreader-enabled, memtest86+, reboot, shutdown, and EFI firmware setup. The console screenreader espeakup, the braille TTY driver brltty, and the GUI screenreader orca are now included in all live ISOs for x86_64 and i686. To learn more about this, read the documentation in the Void Linux Handbook." Void is an independently-developed, rolling-release Linux distribution with a number of interesting specifics, such as its own package management system (called XBPS), a native init system (runit), integration of LibreSSL instead of OpenSSL and support for several popular ARM-based devices. The latest release, version 20181111, provides a large number of updates and fixes: "New x86 and ARM images are now available. The x86 images come with multiple flavours: Base system, Enlightenment, Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce, LXDE and LXQt. As usual we also have a supply of ARM images including: BeagleBone and BeagleBone Black, Cubieboard 2, Odroid U2/U3, RaspberryPi (armv6), RaspberryPi 2/3 (armv7). Void also comes in musl C flavors, which use the musl C library, a lightweight alternative to the popular glibc library." Here is the brief release announcement. The project's download page lists a large number of ISO and IMG files for various architectures; here we link to the standard (using glibc) x86_64 live ISO images with various popular desktop environments (SHA256, pkglist): void-live-x86_64-20181111-cinnamon.iso (727MB), void-live-x86_64-20181111-enlightenment.iso (649MB), void-live-x86_64-20181111-lxde.iso (612MB), void-live-x86_64-20181111-lxqt.iso (652MB), void-live-x86_64-20181111-mate.iso (806MB), void-live-x86_64-20181111-xfce.iso (693MB). |
