I saw in another review it was using 1.4 GB of RAM but I checked htop and it was using under 400 MB on my machine. The default desktop is not to my taste at all, but luckily it didn't take much investigation to turn off ibar, idesk and conky for a more streamlined and minimal desktop that I prefer. Always liked the JWM window manager from my first encounters with Puppy Linux many years ago and this seems a well setup version of it. Not that much software included, you have to download extra software normally present in most distros via the extensions menu. I would normally go straight to Antix when trying to resurrect old hardware, but this is a decent alternative with less busy menus. Was this review helpful? Yes No Version: 46.0 Rating: 3 Date: 2024-08-30 Votes: 1 Installed as guest in Virtualbox running on Win11 without a hitch, it ran smoothly while I poked around without incident. I couldn't install the VBoxAdditions because the kernel headers needed to be installed first, I've no doubt that can be done with very little research but I wanted to install to bare metal next so I didn't bother. After setting aside a partition on the ssd drive I installed it and again, no issues. Now to how it looks and feels. For those who have been around since Win95 this in many ways is reminiscent of those days, perhaps even an early beta of Win95 because the final release Win95 was a very polished product of it's time whereas this is more like a run-up to that point. It is functional though a little clunky but clunky never hurt anyone right? It's modest use of ram is no doubt of interest to anyone running an antique or hand-me-down, for everyone else it's very snappy as one might expect. The first shock I got was opening the installed web browser. Forgive me I've forgotten the name of it and to be frank I think thats a good thing, much like not recalling the details of an serious accident one has been involved in, as the mind attempts to save one from the stress. The browser had a link to the BBC website so I thought right then, let's take a look-see.. but no! It cannot correctly display the BBC's website. I know.. criminal right?! ANyhoo... so this distro works, it runs, it's small, it's quick, and before anyone says it... it's free. Was this review helpful? Yes No Version: 44.0 Rating: 8 Date: 2024-02-13 Votes: 9 This is a rating and my impressions for the version 45.0, 64bit (and not for version 44.0) which I downloaded from the website. It installs in about 30 seconds from Ventoy. Ram usage is relatively high, at about 2.1GB, because everything probably is loaded into ram. The CPU usage is extremely low when compared to every other Linux distribution I have tried and is very similar to Windows when watching YouTube videos on the latest Firefox. Shut down is extremely fast, which is about 2 seconds. The only reason why I cannot use it as an experimental daily driver is because it does not recognize encrypted media, and thence does not prompt for a password for me to open the USB drive. If not for this, I would have installed and given a more comprehensive impression on this quaint and extremely low on CPU resources Linux operating system.
