antiX

Last Update: 2019-10-17 14:17 UTC

antiX is a fast, lightweight and easy-to-install Linux live CD distribution based on Debian's "Stable" branch for x86 compatible systems. antiX offers users the "antiX Magic" in an environment suitable for old computers. The goal of antiX is to provide a light, but fully functional and flexible free operating system for both newcomers and experienced users of Linux. It should run on most computers, ranging from 256 MB old PIII systems with pre-configured swap to the latest powerful boxes. 256 MB RAM is recommended minimum for antiX. The installer needs minimum 2.7 GB hard disk size. antiX can also be used as a fast-booting rescue CD, or run "live" on a USB stick, with or without persistent file storage.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

What I consider perfection:
1) it's a Greek distro - as is MX, the #1 ranked distro - one made by the antiX team and the ex-Mepis team, so a combo Greek / American distro and another distro to definitely take for a spin
2) it WORKS, well
3) it's true to the UNIX philosophy - do one thing and do it well, which it does with flying colors
4) core is perfection, though I'd recommend full for Linux newcomers, though even core is simplicity at its finest and has a fast learning curve
5) as another reviewer said, Openbox is the bomb (to paraphrase)
6) Anything you want, you can have insofar as browsers, development software, etc. - in past releases you could have Firefox ESR or the latest Firefox - now you can have BOTH :)

What I consider imperfection:
1) I've found nothing yet

Fantastic distro for old computers AND for old people that dont have a very good learning curve :-)

I installed it on an 11 years old AcerPower desktop (born with XP) 2 Gram, Genuine Intel(R) CPU 2140@1.60GHz, where was previously installed Antix 17.4.1.

The installation process was fast and with no issues.
The wifi works with ndiswrapper on a very old ATX111: no problems.
I like the choice to have Connman instead of Ceni.
I like too the possibility to use Samba client with no tweaks (symply editing the server’s ip address on SpaceFM).

I don’t like the way they handle the Samba server, so I decided to install it in a normal “Debian way” instead of Droopy.

I’ve also find a way to install Plank (in order to have it working with all the features, I discovered that I should activate xcompmgr: it works like a charm).

I don’t like the fact that I was obliged to write by hand the “fstab” in order to have the possibility to work on my “Data” HD (sdc5): for me that’s a bit frustrating and a waste of time.

That's the reason why my evaluation is not 10.

Now everything works like a charm and just after the start the system occupies only 142 Mram.

THIS is a real and complete system that works fine also on very old hw.
It is far more better than Tiny core linux or Slitaz that have a lot of problems.

In this specific segment of linux distro light I think Antix is the #1 ex aequo with Q4OS (over all because the *buntus, after the 18.04 became too much heavy and are compeeting in other areas, but not this one).

Excellent job! Much better than previous version 17.4.1
pros: easy to install (Dell Inspiron N5010 4GB RAM), multiple users configuration now working perfecty,
cons: (maybe my fault..) I had some problem to set up a wifi connection by means of the GUI. Solved by CLI
