Arch Linux

Last Update: 2018-11-18 02:20 UTC

Arch Linux is an independently developed, x86_64-optimised Linux distribution targeted at competent Linux users. It uses 'pacman', its home-grown package manager, to provide updates to the latest software applications with full dependency tracking. Operating on a rolling release system, Arch can be installed from a CD image or via an FTP server. The default install provides a solid base that enables users to create a custom installation. In addition, the Arch Build System (ABS) provides a way to easily build new packages, modify the configuration of stock packages, and share these packages with other users via the Arch Linux user repository.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Arch is extremely stable even if it has new packages. The only thing you have to do is to have a look at the front page of archlinux.org to see if any manual intervention is needed before updating. If you do this, you will enver run into trouble. If you do not do this, you will believe that Arch is unstable, when in fact you are using it wrong.

It is as hassle to install, but you get the benefit of total control and you learn a lot. This distro is for experienced users and users that want a learning experience. If you want everything to "just work" out of the box, you should use something else. But if you are ok with spending a minute checking the archlinux.org website before updating and like to tweak and customise your Linux experience, Arch has all the documentation you need as well as a rock solid base for you to play with.

The most stable distribution with an unmatched number of ready-to-use
packages at your disposal. Bar none.

The installation may be successful as long as you follow the steps
closely and patiently. No room for instant-gratification seekers
because this is not what Arch Linux is about. If your main objective
is having a GUI installer that turns into a functional Desktop Environment after rebooting the system - you'd better look elsewhere. Manjaro, Antergos, Arco might give you those extra options.

Arch Linux is the sleeping beast. It grows as long you grow. It
behaves all in accordance with the limits of your ingeniousness and/or stupidity
allows it to.

Arch has a lot of things going for it, but it isn't really practical for doing real work. I installed it on two laptops. It was quite a challenge to install, and I have more than 15 years of experience using Linux daily. Once installed, it was fast and minimal. It only had packages that I specifically wanted. All the packages are bleeding edge, updates appear daily.

A number of reviews state that Arch is stable. All the latest packages and stability? It seemed too good to be true. Well, it was. After one week of use, it was broken to an un-bootable state. The latest upgrade included several core packages (systemd, the kernel, and firmware). Despite this concerning me, I went ahead and upgraded them. My laptop began freezing, I suspected it was related to my graphics card module. I tried downgrading the kernel to linux-lts, and then it booted to a blank screen. I was able to chroot into the laptop using an Arch USB stick. Chroot itself is a chore, because you have to manually configure the network, and manually mount the partitions of the hard drive each time you need chroot to test a possible fix. After screwing around for 1 hour, I decided to quit. I'm overwriting the install with Debian right now.

Pros:

- a great learning tool
- a sense of achievement after getting it installed
- all of the latest bleeding edge packages
- very knowledgeable user base results in excellent documentation and commentary on the forums.

Cons:

- it will break
- repairing a broken state is tedious and time consuming
