Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I've found KDE Plasma to be slow and very resource demanding on both my older and newer laptops so I prefer to run xfce or cinnamon desktops, as they seem more responsive.

I have been with Scientific Linux for many years but made the jump to BlueStar about three days ago. The trigger was the arrival of a new 500GB SSD so it was time to reinstall everything - perfect opportunity to try something new that looked enticing.

So far, I'm very pleased. There are a few things I need to [re]learn as the base distros are quite different (Arch vs. RH), the biggest being pacman for package management, but overall the transition has been quite smooth for me. It's fast, it's clean and it seems to handle hosting VMs on my hardware quite well (using KVM/QEMU). It's my new distro of choice.

I give it 8/10 because of a couple of weird behaviors I can't seem to iron out. It tends to forget settings between reboots on occasion, and it *never* reconnects to my wireless network after a reboot without manual intervention even though it has retained my network key and is set to connect automatically when the network is available. These are irritations but they're not showstoppers as I can set things again and, with the exception of the wireless, I can usually make changes permanent.

Fine distro! I am still learning as I go, but so far I am glad I gave it the chance.
