Clear Linux

Last Update: 2019-10-15 16:21 UTC

Clear Linux is a minimal distribution primarily designed with performance and cloud use-cases in mind. The operating system upgrades as a whole rather than using individual packages. Extra software can be added to the system (along with associated dependencies) using pre-compiled bundles which can be accessed through the distribution's swupd software manager.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I use CL on a 10 year old slow Lenovo T520 Sandy Bridge notebook with dedicated Nvidia chip.

With CL the notebook feels like a 9900K, especially once the native Nvidia driver is running and the internal Intel GPU switched off.

Chrome is very fast, even when I open 100 websites, everything opens close to instant.
I also have Windows on the same notebook, and its slow, especially when I open many Chrome tabs.

The complexity to get all notebook features is similar to Debian 10 or FreeBSD 12. Due to the lack of apt, you have to do lots of "make install" trips, but things usually work fine after that.
While Debian and BSD run fairly fast on the notebook, you can clearly feel that CL is faster when used with GNOME.

As new kernels are pushed quite often, the nvidia driver needs to be reinstalled, but that can be scripted and takes just 3 minutes.

The bundle system is quite silly, to get a missing library you have to install a bundle which installs all kind of crap on the GNOME desktop which you needs to clean up again. You want to take bundles over flatpaks for speed benefits, but still CL needs something like apt and give users a choice.

In general, I'm happy to have a fast notebook again, all apps work fine, VLC, OpenRA, Skype etc.

Pros:
1) hands down the fastest Linux distro every.
2) power optimization so you will notice your battery lasting significantly longer, and cooler.
3) works with intel chips since 2011
4) rolling release but doesn't feel unstable
5) flatpaks ready out of the box(with gnome)
6) data science tools optimized -- Rstudio and python fly in this OS

Cons:
1) repos leave a lot to be desired
2) installer missing some basic features and its Very clunky
3) Stateless distro so a lot of packages that are easy to build on other distros might need tweaking to this non standard distro
4) Not ready for primetime just yet but getting there pretty quick.
