DistroWatch.com: Clear Linux

Clear Linux

Last Update: 2017-08-26 01:22 UTC

Clear Linux is a minimal distribution primarily designed with performance and cloud use-cases in mind. The operating system upgrades as a whole rather than using individual packages. Extra software can be added to the system (along with associated dependencies) using pre-compiled bundles which can be accessed through the distribution's swupd software manager.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Perfect distro for cloud/vps or local VM deployment, has ready to boot images for all major VM/Cloud platforms and updates packages (bundles) on a daily, weekly basis.

Has ready to boot vhdx hyper-v images, with latest and LTS kernels to choose from. The stateless operation mode ensures that its always in a "working" state and its easy to see what admin changes you did via a /etc /var.

Perfect for local/cloud docker deployment platform, while the focus on some core scenarios and the "bundle" concept makes auto-updates possible and stable. You can rollback to any OS state version with a single command.

Complete OS hash file verification, allows to test the full installed os against the repo state and will list any modifications and can clean/rebuild to a full "known" state. So removing/reverting any changes or unwanted modifications can not only be tracked, but actually easily fixed in seconds.

Special kernel patches per platform to ensure maximum performance and minimal boot times, as example boots in under 1 second into cli using the hyper-v images.

Sits in the middle between something like Ubuntu Core/Server and RancherOS/Linuxkit.

Depending on who you are Clear Linux may or may not be for you. In my case I do a lot of scientific computations and a lot of code compiling. Clear Linux has been far the best experience. Less hangs while sending these tasks to the background and using my computer for other things. A lot of applications that you would find normally pre-installed are not there but they are not too hard to install on Clear Linux. Documentation is slightly lacking but livable. Careful for the OOM killer though as it seems to be more eager than on other distributions. Overall Clear Linux is my daily driver now.

Using this on bare metal with a direct ethernet connection to proxy route and firewall a LAN. It is fast fast fast. I like these edge case OS-es for security reasons. Needs a bit more polish in a couple areas but overall is solid.
