Cyrethium is a Debian-based Linux distribution focused on privacy and security. It can route all incoming and outgoing internet traffic through the Tor network. DNSCrypt-Proxy and I2P Router are pre-configured. It provides strong protection against browser attacks with custom hardened Firefox variants. The distribution hosts a wide range of tools designed from scratch for Cyrethium and includes multi-layered hardening against cyber attacks. There are four different editions available: two core and two respins.
To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
Colour scheme:green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I believe Cyrethium is the most powerful among privacy-focused distributions. It has very interesting capabilities. When used correctly, it can prevent exit node attacks and even correlation. What sets Cyrethium apart here is that instead of artificially generating fake traffic, it actually sends requests to truly random websites. This makes it impossible for someone monitoring your network to determine which activity is genuine. Another feature I like is that it separates your tasks by using two different Firefox browsers. Using Amnesic for sensitive tasks and Hardened Firefox for everyday tasks ensures strong privacy, and you can use both at the same time. This is better than the single browser approach. I looked at the configuration; the browsers are customized via user.js. Cyrethium browsers are truly as powerful as Tor Browser and much more robust than Arkenfox. The biggest drawback is that the browsers are not sandboxed, so I'll deduct one point for that. If you add the firejail --apparmor parameter to the exec section in Cyrethium's browser .desktop files, security will be greatly enhanced. Other than that, it's a really solid and quite unique project. Congratulations. However, if you're new to Linux, I wouldn't recommend using this distribution. You should know that using Cyrethium is as complicated as using Qubes. Using the wrong tool at the wrong time can compromise your anonymity.

Frankly, I have to admit that I used to see hope in this distribution, but now I'm a bit undecided. Technically, Cyrethium is a really solid distribution with strong routing, browser configurations, and system hardening. It has nice tools that set it apart from other operating systems, such as its own sandbox tool, Plaztek, and its own exploit detection framework, Anti-Exploit Suite. On the downside, the distribution is lacking in terms of AppArmor profiles, and it comes with quite a lot of pre-installed firmware, which increases the attack surface. Additionally, the developer stated they would regularly release a Warrant Canary, but failed to follow through on this promise. Interestingly, the distribution's GitHub location shows a game map that doesn't actually exist, and its website is filled with game characters???? This makes me question the distribution's seriousness; it feels more like a game distribution than a privacy-focused one. Overall, the distribution is technically sound, conceptually very different, and has potential. However, I cannot recommend this distribution at the moment because its future is quite uncertain and the developer is not active...
