I am Octavian Vasar from Arad , Romania . My first experience with Linux goes back to 1998 . Being a distro-hopper , since than I tryed plenty GNU/Linux distros . But to stick to this subject , I recently installed and I am using Deepin Linux 20.9 for three weeks now . In my opinion : - the PROS are : - easy and fast install - beautiful , easy to understand login screen and desktop environment (DDE) - in the case of my laptop (ASUS N550JK) all the drivers (including Nvidia , Bluetooth etc) were automatically detected and installed ! - also all function keys were automatically detected and work as a charm ! - easy install of apps using the App Store , Synaptic Package Manager , or APT from a terminal - source compilation for those who want to dig deeper - intuitive administrative tasks via Control Center - the default browser , called simply "browser" (and based on chromium) is lightning fast - many useful extensions can be added to the browser , via Chrome Web Store - extensions I use : Dark Mode , Just Read , Addblock for YouTube ... - after three weeks of daily usage I've got no error , everything is very stable - CONS : - in Console-session (not a terminal under X) , I found no way to scroll back the results (for example for "ps -A" ) . But maybe I am omitting something . - something strange happened to me while installing and using other browsers , kinda not responding ; but because the default "browser" runs very well , I remained stick to it . Initially I was considering my rating to be a 9 . But because the CONS are minor , because the pleasant UI/UX experience , because of the stability and usability in any field due to the numerous apps , I am going to rate Deepin with a 10 ! And this is also due to their efforts to adopt and pursue a unifying view ; I mean it is nice to have more choices but sometimes too many choices dissipate the efforts and only increase the probability of generating bugs . Yes No Version: 20.9 Rating: 8 Date: 2023-08-15 Votes: 9 Deepin seems to me like a distro that hasn't quite reached its peak form, but is already potentially on the decline. However, it also seems the closest distro to the "out of the box" experience that people crave from Windows and Mac. And yet its flaws prevent it from achieving that. Before describing those flaws, I'll comment generally on my experience. I think the Deepin desktop environment manages to give a very simple and intuitive desktop that has almost everything you need out of the box. In my experience it is more polished than Cinnamon, more stable than KDE and more feature-rich than Gnome. There's just the right amount of customization, and it doesn't need any more because it knows its target audience. The "under-the-hood" stuff is extremely stable and functional. Everything just works. The store may occasionally fail to load a page, but it works after 1 or 2 refreshes. There is a suite of applications, all of which are very competent and can genuinely be used as your primary applications. Now I'll list all the things I disliked: 1) Janky visuals. Many apps will have simply white backgrounds or load up an Adwaita theme but with some weird borders. The symbolic tray icons will sometimes load up the wrong color (i.e. dark on dark) and blend with the background. 2) Panel size can be changed by dragging. Not technically a flaw, but I dislike this. Panel size is something you wanna change once and never touch again, but with this draggable area, you will accidentally drag it when you don't want that. 3) You can't grab windows at any spot and drag them by holding Alt or Super. This is not an issue on big monitors, but on smaller ones like mine (1366x768 res.), some windows won't fit into the screen, and you can't see what's behind the screen. 4) No pre-installed Flatpak, and once you install it, it doesn't integrate into the store or have its own store. After you browse their default store for a while, it quickly becomes apparent that you'll need more than it has to offer. I ended up using Bauh, but downloading a 3rd-party application for this is not ideal. 5) No native weather plugin to show weather on the panel. 6) Some apps generate 2 tray icons. This is a bug that's been reported years ago and still isn't fixed. 7) If you arrange your desktop icons a certain way, they will automatically rearrange themselves about once every couple of days. 8) I have 3 keyboard inputs, and sometimes it just won't switch to the third one, jumping between the first and the second. 9) Tray icons occasionally also rearrange themselves 10) I've not been able to find the end of life date online. Deepin 20.9 is based on Debian 10, which is already dead, but I assume the Deepin theme is rolling out patches. But how do I know they won't immediately stop maintaining 20.9 once 23 gets released? I've not been able to find any info on this. 11) Every time I connect my Bluetooth headphones, I have to go into the sound setting and change the output device to ad2p. These are all minor issues that you can live with, but they do leave a bad taste in the month. More importantly though, I could possibly live with them and expect them to get fixed in the next version, but it'll probably introduce more. And the future of this distro seems very murky. First of all, they recently announced that they're planning to ditch the Debian base and become independent. Secondly, they're developing their own containerized packaging format. Clearly, they'll never be able to match the amount of software available with both Debian and Flatpak, and the software availability situation is already kinda dire. Currently it is still a solid distro though, but I have a feeling it's digging its own grave, and perhaps I should jump the ship now and not get used to it only to say goodbye to it later. I plan to continue using it in the future. The biggest advantage of this system is that it has a well-established store that can support commonly used apps for daily work and use. It is also very friendly to Xiaobai. The system is still in continuous development, and there are many areas that can improve optimization, such as the customizability of the desktop (which seems to be its advantage because it is relatively simple and concise). Then there is still room for improvement in the smoothness of the system desktop, and I hope the development team can work hard to improve it. Was this review helpful?
