Devuan GNU+Linux

Last Update: 2017-12-14 06:50 UTC

Devuan GNU+Linux is a Linux distribution forked from Debian in 2015. The project's primary goal is to provide a variant of Debian without the complexities and dependencies of systemd, an init system and services manager originally developed by Red Hat and later adopted by most other Linux distributions. Devuan's initial beta release was made available in April 2016, together with an upgrade path from Debian 7.0 "Wheezy" and a possibility to switch to Devuan from Debian 8.0 "Jessie". The distribution adopted Xfce as its default desktop.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Have been using Devuan on my servers for a little while now and will continue to do so. It's been a rock solid workhorse of an operating system and with it being founded around a real init system it's easy and quick to whip up new init scripts to manage a daemon that lacks a traditional init script.

I came from CentOS and Debian, as they have both begun to use systemd and I (and my team) simply do not have the time to learn an entirely new way of managing the system as well as some grievances with the way it operates (proprietary log formats, what the hell? Syslog is the industry standard!).

The only issue now is LOB applications now need to support Devuan, and IaaS providers like DigitalOcean also need to add their support. Would love to run Devuan in DigitalOcean.

(step up your game Atlassian!)

Very nice distribution. Everything works fine. I replaced WICD with Networkmanager so I can easy use VPN and replaced Xarchiver with Engrampa. Xarchiver gave some problems with P7z compressed files. Engrampa works flawless.

I have a 2009 Compaq laptop with about 1GB RAM and 8 linux distros and Vista that came with it. Needless to say which is the worst but I can surely say that Devuan is the best one. Devuan might not be the latest bleeding edge distro but is the most stable one, simply amazing compared to the other ones, For the simple needs that I have for this laptop, Devuan is the best experience so far.
