FreeBSD

Last Update: 2026-02-12 08:21 UTC

FreeBSD is a UNIX-like operating system for the i386, amd64, IA-64, arm, MIPS, powerpc, ppc64, PC-98 and UltraSPARC platforms based on U.C. Berkeley's "4.4BSD-Lite" release, with some "4.4BSD-Lite2" enhancements. It is also based indirectly on William Jolitz's port of U.C. Berkeley's "Net/2" to the i386, known as "386BSD", though very little of the 386BSD code remains. FreeBSD is used by companies, Internet Service Providers, researchers, computer professionals, students and home users all over the world in their work, education and recreation. FreeBSD comes with over 20,000 packages (pre-compiled software that is bundled for easy installation), covering a wide range of areas: from server software, databases and web servers, to desktop software, games, web browsers and business software - all free and easy to install.

Popularity (hits per day): 12 months: 26 (404), 6 months: 26 (413), 3 months: 26 (417), 4 weeks: 43 (344), 1 week: 38 (451)

Average visitor rating: 8.7/10 from 79 review(s).

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

A very underrated OS, compared to all of the Linux distributions that are out right now.

Very good documentation, simple package management, and an extremely reliable set of tools. If it got as much attention as current day Linux, the Wi-fi and graphics drivers would be regularly up to date and would probably rival Linux in terms of performance.

One gripe I have is with the bsdconfig utility. In the past you could manage your packages from there. It seems to have been abandoned, as any attempt will bring up a "No database found!" error. This has been an issue for a couple of versions, yet it has not been addressed. The package management was really solid as well, giving clear cut categories and showing dependencies in a human readable format. I really hope the FreeBSD team addresses this at some point.

If you are an experienced Linux user, I would recommend giving vanilla FreeBSD a try, even if the software stack desktop-wise is behind compared to what you have been used to.

I have been running Windows , Linux and FreeBSD on and off for many years. Windows for work, Linux for fun and playing with FreeBSD to learn a new operating system. I have run FreeBSD on and off since 2K. I have been using it as a daily driver form 12.x to 15. The OS has come a long way as a daily driver. My main usage was to replicate the work flow from Windows and use FreeBSD as a work machine instead. Work means OKTA, VPN;s, MS Office, WebEx, and so on.

With some time I was able to use FreeBSD as a work replacement machine. I used Rclone for remote file systems (DropBox, ShareFile, OneDrive, etc) which set up was a game changer. I needed two browsers. Chrome using a user agent to log into my OKTA account and Office365 and Firefox for everything else. I need Office but use LibreOffice as my main office suite. I run IPP printers, scanners, USB connected external drives, Webcam, External mic and speakers all w/o issue. It does take time and patience to set up and run but can be done. Once setup everything works.

I really like boot environments and setting everything up with ~4 files to configure everything. When you master the system its than you realize how powerful it is. It takes time to learn but worth the effort. If you want Mint install Mint.

The challenge is finding the balance of what you need and how to get the work flow. On all my other devices I use Brave as my default browser. You can install Brave with Linux emulation. Big can of worms from my experience. I do have to have a Windows VM. Bhyve is great but still young. I use VirtualBox which runs great and holds my Windows fallback when necessary. Still keeps me on one OS.

There is Wine but it seems "broken" the lib32 environment is flaky at best and needed for most Windows software.

In the end its the stability, easy updates, oh...and ZFS which is amazing. I cant say how many times ZFS boot environments have saved me. There is a great support community. One downside is that many Blogs, articles, Wiki's are not kept up to date and version mismatches are common on HowTo's.

If you want a rock solid OS with trimmings you will not get in Windows and Linux than FreeBSD is for you. Expect to put in time to get where you need but its worth it. I have tried to go back to Arch, OpenSUSE, etc. I always come back.

I hope this help someone on the fence to try and run FreeBSD. Don't get me wrong, Linux is great but FreeBSD just feels right.

Version FreeBSD 15.0

Installed on Lenovo laptop G500. Everything is working fine, after initial install i have installed KDE Plasma, didn't have sound after boot. Ahter logout then re-login, sound is working fine. I made a script for restarting pulseaudio in autostart program. Now is fine. Installed Lazarus, Code and Go and I am impressed by the compiling speed. Installed also wine and application that I have tested are working faster under Freebsd than in Windows 11 on much more potent and younger laptop.
