GeckoLinux

Last Update: 2017-08-26 01:22 UTC

GeckoLinux is a Linux spin based on the openSUSE distribution, with a focus on polish and out-of-the-box usability on the desktop. The distribution features many desktop editions which can be installed from live discs. Some patent encumbered open source software is included in GeckoLinux which is not available in the default installation of openSUSE. Special attention has been given to the quality of the font rendering. GeckoLinux provides two main editions, Static (which is based on openSUSE Leap) and Rolling (based on openSUSE Tumbleweed).

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

The budgie version attracted me with its look. However, it was incredibly slow compared already with Leap 42.3. the slowest distro out of mote than 15, i tested in same conditions. Also, most of the right mouse button click options are gone.

In my opinion the rolling release of GeckoLinux (based on openSUSE Tumbleweed) is currently the best GNU/Linux operating system available.

Everything just WORKS!

As of this date, the ISO disc is over six months old - but, if you follow the tips I mention, you should have not problems.

Install the system and reboot. Then, before doing anything else, do the following:

1. Allow Vendor Change by Removing Vendor Stickiness (Instructions here: < https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Vendor_change_update > Go to bottom of page). 2. If Broadcom shows a conflict when updating, remove the two (2) Broadcom programs (the ones with the full name in them) by using Install/Update Programs. 3. Remove mesa-dri-nouveau by using Install/Update Programs. 4. Go into the Menu->System->YAST->System->Kernel Settings->Kernel Settings and change Global I/O Scheduler to show Completely Fair Queuing [cfq] and click OK.

Reboot again and only then update the system. (The first update will be large but if you have a fairly fast Internet connection, it should not take too much time).

Once this is all done, you'll have what it, as I said, the best GNU/Linux operating system currently available.
