DistroWatch.com: Korora Project

Korora Project

Last Update: 2017-11-27 23:39 UTC

Korora was born out of a desire to make Linux easier for new users, while still being useful for experts. The main goal of Korora is to provide a complete, easy-to-use system for general computing. Originally based on Gentoo Linux in 2005, Korora was re-born in 2010 as a Fedora Remix with tweaks and extras to make the system "just work" out of the box.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I wanted to use KDE Plasma 5 and stumbled upon Korora 26. As a user of Linux Mint, some of the changes that Mint has made recently have left some of my programs unable to work so I tried Korora. To date, Korora has been nice to use, less some of the glitches in the plasma interface. Fore example, removing a font will only work once. Try it twice and it requires re-boot of machine and I don't like having to sign in with a password more than once when working with a program. Korora also has a kernal that recognizes my internal wireless radio. I am using an ACER Aspire 5750Z and to date, no other Linux system I have tried will recognize it. Maybe with the new Linux kernal, some of the other linux distro's would also work but I am reluctant to try anything new for now. I will stick with the Korora distribution. Just a note: if your used to Linux mint, you will probably be overwelmed with the customization alternatives that plazma 5 gives you. It will take awhile to get it to your liking but be patient, its work the tweaking that you don't get with other distro's like Mint.

Really happy with Korora currently running on my NUC7i5BNH (+ older laptops).

Personally I've found Gnome to be the best desktop environment working with this OS (make sure you select the Desktop Environment you desire at download as the default is selected randomly otherwise).

By default (much like Fedora) we are using Wayland for the display server protocol. The one area this was a problem was with my Wacom tablet. It will only work in GTK3 apps with this configuration. I simply logout/login using Gnome Xorg option (using the X11 protocol)... then the tablet is usable within other apps (Krita etc).

In the past I have found that Fedora required additional installs and tweaks to set it up to a usable level, whereas Korora simply doesn't.

One of my laptops requires the legacy Nvidia drivers to be installed after each kernal upgrade but feel this is the laptop's quirk not the os.

I upgraded from 25 to 26 which worked seamlessly... favourite distro so far.

Superb distro.
Korora, is to Fedora what Mint is to Ubuntu, a nicely enhanced spin of a valuable distro :
Fixes many of the little annoyances of Fedora.
Runs "Out of the box" unlike Fedora.
Fedora MATE is so far my favorite Linux distro, but requires requires lots of post-install work, to be usable.
And Korora, is Fedora MATE, just enhanced !
The repos are the same, and RPMFUSION is available by default on Korora.

I have tried Ubuntu 17.10 MATE for several months, and was never convinced, in many area Fedora is much superior, in my view to UBUNTU: speed, stability, repositories of the repositories, package manager (DNF runs circles around APT).

Korora for the impatient has the drawback to usually come several months after the original Fedora release, with the benefit of a much easier install, and some minor cosmetic enhancements.

Try the Live distro, MATE...
Andre G.
