I tested various Linux with Kubuntu as my favourite and Linux Mint as a good second. I like both because of the classic look and Kubuntu is highly configurable. I prefer Kubuntu over Mint because Mint seems to be lagging behind in updates. But there are some things that annoy me about Kubuntu. Sometimes, for some reason I haven't figured out yet, it either hangs or completely crashes. I can't find any information in the logs why it crashes. Another issue, which puzzles me that it hasn't been resolved, is the problem of copying large files to USB. It goes very slowly. Without changing some settings, it will not be fixed. With 24.04, which uses pipewire, I have problems with Firefox or Konquer when accessing websites that run web-sdr. The browser sometimes has gaps in audio which is pretty annoying. Haven't figures out if this is a browser problem, a memory buffering problem, or a pipewire problem. I did not have that problem with pulseaudio. I don't have the problem with I use my own SDR stick. I've only had it running on one machine, a newish Acer Aspire with plenty of RAM and a great processor etc. Install went smoothly and the personal tweaking I usually do on KDE Plasma has gone well with nothing unexpected. I am not a fan of Ubuntu and it's many many forks/siblings/children/clones/girls-next-door whatever. But I gave Kubuntu a try just to keep up with the fuss. And I dare say it's as good as any other distro expected to run without getting in the way. Ubuntu is Ubuntu, no matter the desktop, I suppose. Will I keep this? Probably not. But I do want to run it for a few months just to see if anything crops up around update times. Do I recommend Kubuntu? Yeah if you're okay with it's parent. But as I say that's personal. YMMV. I successfully installed Kubuntu on two of my computers. The distro has run very well on these two machines and I was pleased enough that I proceeded to try and install it on a third machine. When I went to install Kubuntu on my third computer, I had a poor experience. I installed the "typical installation" and the distro started to run in what appeared to be a normal fashion. However, it did not recognize my printer, my internet, or my sound. I tried a variety of solutions to fix the problem, but nothing was successful. I "shifted gears" and installed KDE Neon and it installed easily and quickly recognized my printer, internet and sound. Were it not for the latest installation problems, I would have rated Kubuntu a "9". Given the problems I described, I can't rate it higher than the indicated "7". Was this review helpful?
