Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

This is what Lubuntu 19.04 should really be like. The LXDE desktop is really good to use for the more advanced user and seems a lot less buggy than Xfce. All the usual user applications installed fine (Steam, VLC, Chrome and Firefox) and coupled with the Plank dock, make it look really nice. There where some issues, especially if you use snaps, with some simple tweaking can be resolved. I like the fact it uses Synaptic rather than a software centre. If you want to make it 'heavy' you can, but if you want to have a nice lightweight distro, this is really good.

It should come as no surprise that the developer has used LXDE as the desktop. He has stated many times that he would not use LxQt, so no surprises and full marks for keeping to his principles. I for one have no problem with that.

I'm a little surprised at the choice of AbiWord and Gnumeric over LibreOffice. The latter is much better when you have to work with files from Windows (excuse my language).

Seamonkey is not a favourite with me, but I respect the reasons for the choice, and I'm willing to give it a go. If I decide it's not for me, I will replace it with Firefox.

That's the joy of Linux, if you like something better that what is installed, you can change it. Not like some other OS's out there.

Overall, LXLE is, as always, lightweight and fast, pleasing on the eye, and easy for even the greenest of newbies to install. I installed LXLE 12.04 back in 2014 when I first started using Linux. I had no regrets then, I will have none with this offering.

To the developer, well done and welcome back.

LXLE is the ideal distro for me. It is easy to install, intuitive, small, runs on just about any machine, fast, stable, and comes bundled with just about any software you might need. It's hard to find any fault with LXLE. [I do confess, however, that I am not a gamer, so I can't comment on how it does there.] I also find the desktop environment, (LXDE), to be very attractive, and I like the way it functions better than any other I've used. The only gripe I've got against LXLE is that it's still stuck on version 16.04.4, Thus, I've given it a 9 rating instead of a 10. Maybe staying on the cutting edge isn't such a big deal. It's like wanting a new car all the time, when your "old car" is running just fine. From my experience, LXLE is a great distro, and will not disappoint.
