Mageia is a fork of Mandriva Linux formed in September 2010 by former employees and contributors to the popular French Linux distribution. Unlike Mandriva, which is a commercial entity, Mageia is a community project and a non-profit organisation whose goal is to develop a free Linux-based operating system.
To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
Colour scheme:green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

;)

I have been using Mageia since it was Mandrake, then Mandriva and finally Mageia. Each time, it has gotten better and with more software in their repositories.
I am currently running Mageia 9 on a Lenovo laptop from 2017. it found all of the installed hardware, detected the WIFI card with Bluetooth and booted perfectly. The amazing part is how many file system choices are available during the install, from EXT4 to BTRFS to JFS and almost anything in-between.
Its security updates are timely and stable, easily installed via urpmi, dnf, dnfdragora, flatpak or rpmdrake (your choice).
It is not bleeding edge like a lot of Arch distros, but if that is what you want then Arch is there for that purpose. Nor is it stuck in the woods, like some of the Debian derivatives. it is a well balanced distro between security and stability.
If you want hardware support out of the box and easy configuration (MCC) then Mageia is for you.

I have two OS:s on my different computers: Raspberry or Mageia. My current workhorse lap came with W11. Canged directly to bigger ssd, expanded to 64 GB ram, installed Mageia 9 and there is no issues at all. I use two extra monitors in three different locations. I write and I work with Scribus, Audacity and Kdenlive etcetera and make money with my setup. Mageia is the successor leading from the Mandrake era, when I got used to Linux, for all my needs. Last summer I tested quite a few distros on a similar machine as mine. Mageia gives me no issues. It just works, very well indeed. AppImages also works well. Just use Mageia for your daily OS. Tell your friends.
I run Mageia 10 (Cooker) on a separate machine via ssh and home automation and that way I run newer version programs over my in house network, when and if I want to.
A friend of mine got a new laptop and put it in a drawer. He could not use it. Warnings and popups everywhere. After a month he told me about the drama. After a cup of coffee and some reasoning I nuked the hard drive and installed Mageia 8, or was it 7. He asked the other day for Mageia 10. It makes me really happy to see him as the accustomed every day Linux-user he has become. He is also happy about calling himself a linux user. I think he is 75 today.
Upgrades to M10 due in may I think. Looking forward to it. Mageia is a really really good. Thanks.
