Mageia is a fork of Mandriva Linux formed in September 2010 by former employees and contributors to the popular French Linux distribution. Unlike Mandriva, which is a commercial entity, the Mageia project is a community project and a non-profit organisation whose goal is to develop a free Linux-based operating system.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I use Q4OS as my daily driver on an old Acer Aspire 5315 (2GB ram, 500 GB hard drive). It runs good. It kept the laptop from ending up in the dumpster. My sister had the same exact model and was about to throw it away. I intercepted it from her lol. Even though Q4OS is a great distro for older hardware, I wanted to try something different. So I decided to try a different Linux distro on her laptop. I did a search on Google and found an article that discussed light Linux distributions for older PCs. Someone in the article mentioned Mageia. So I went ahead and downloaded the 32 bit XFCE version to try it out. It's odd that Mageia isn't mentioned much in the Linux community. It is a great distro! It runs pretty good on my Aspire 5315 laptop. I can only imagine how nice it would run on modern hardware. Installation was easy, updating the system was simple, and there is a great assortment of software available. I was even able to find an older software I used in the past to edit RAW format digital images (UFRaw) which is no longer available in other distros. I now have two Linux distros that I really enjoy using. Give Mageia a try. Chances are you won't be disappointed.

one of the best Linux distributions for beginners and advanced users alike. It allowed me to easily encrypt my hard disk with LVM partitioning without having to worry about anything :-)

It's easy to use and very pleasant, especially under Gnome, even though Mageia is a Plasma/KDE-oriented distribution.

I use it every day on an old 2011 laptop equipped with a core i3. A laptop that won't go to waste when Mageia 10 is released ;-)

I can't recommend this distribution highly enough. Of course, if you want to install Mageia on a very recent computer, it may be more prudent to wait for the release of Mageia 10, or for the more courageous, to use the version currently under development (Cauldron).

A stable release, but lacks a little bit on keeping up with the times. For example it should be using Network manager and not the old scripts. It would benefit in moving from ip tables and shorewall to nftables and firewalld because these are way more adaptable. I find Wayland plasma to be now better than X11 too which is available on mageia. Nvidia support with nouvaux is still a bit of a disaster and allowing easier integration of propriatory drivers would be really useful. Also I have found it good do with better nfv4 support in the control center so that kerberos can be supported, but generally control center is much better than what is offered with ubuntu.

By and large it is a very underrated distro and worthy of much more support. Oh and before I forget kmail isnt very good and they should really adopt thunderbird out of the box.
