Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

In spite of its glossy interface this is in my opinion a very utilitarian version of Linux. I did not find it overly accommodating from a usability perspective (I'll go into that more detail) but did come to grips with it in about three hours (keeping in mind I have many years of experience with software and computer hardware).

The basic system seems to work well enough for the most part and it did a reasonable job of finding my hardware. Its support for my laptops advanced Dolby sound system is excellent and was markedly better than Mint.

That said Manjaro gave off a "nuts and bolts" feel compared to the refinement of Linux Mint. I often felt compelled to resort to using the terminal in this distro. Its GUI software installer had problems installing some software such as a browser I like and simply could not find other software I needed. By contrast Mint rarely could not find what I wanted using its remarkable software manager.

A bigger concern however were the bugs. Steam would not install and it took me a good hour to debug it. This was forgivable on its own as other distro's reported similar issues. What was less easily overlooked was widgets that failed to install properly and the system crashing not once but twice in a row on start up and failing to automatically find my wireless internet (all this in my first three hours of use). Again by contrast Mint only crashed twice in six months plus of use and that was largely down to heat issues with the laptop. With regards to wireless internet I do not remember it ever failing to find my connection.

Suffice to say I'm surprised users have given this distro an 8.8 rating. I'm using a reasonably contemporary and rather expensive laptop that works beautifully for the most part so the problems can't be ascribed to old creaky hardware.

In my view Manjaro has promise but I do not feel it comes close to polished and mature distro's like Mint. For now I rate it 5/10.

I tried your XFCE ! You have done a perfect work here....
XFCE becomes better with Manjaro and even more usefull !
I was a KDE user for years but I can see now a very "odd KDE season" ... To my point of view this plasma transition was rather futile than necessary .. Your XFCE is really a very strong distro , extremely fast and sufficiently polished with a very special manjaro "look and character".
Thank you - keep on your good work !!

I moved from Debian to Manjaro in April 2017. I got tired about the fact that I needed to combine backports, testing and other repos in debian to get the recent software versions I wanted to have (darktable, cinnamon, firefox, etc.).

Manjaro is an excellent distribution. The rolling release concept made me nervous at the beginning. As a long term debian user this is a natural reaction I guess. But Manjaro is actually running very smooth. I did not have had any significant issues. I am tempted to say that I had more issues with debain mixing all the different repositories.

Big thumbs up for Manjaro. I am so convince that I even donated some money to the team!!
