Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I run a number of Xeon systems with dual processors, max memory for my home development environment. The one at my desk has an Nvidia GTX 1060. Most everything is Ubuntu LTS, but I periodically try other Debian systems as VirtualBox guests.

Pop looks interesting, but it got a 1 from me only because there wasn't a 0 available. Specific complaints:

The clever, smooth installer ... is larger than the default 800x600 screen and there is no way to resize it, no way to sneak around in the interface to get at the 'next' button, and it doesn't permit one to take a wild guess and tab through to next.

I was super curious about it, so took the time to find the resolution change in settings so I could actually install. This got me a couple steps further, then it foundered on 'Select a drive', showing me the 10 gig disk I created for the VM, but grayed out and inaccessible.

If you want your new distro to get uptake, a smooth install under VirtualBox is a must.

pop os experience: I installed pop about one year ago (spring 2018) on a lenovo budget laptop. Since that time, I've had to re-install pop-os 2x to recover from software updates which I will discuss below. But the overall look, functionality and usage was good. It takes some getting use to if your coming from the "taskbar" mentality. Once I got by that it was very nice.

ISSUE: The first issue was about a week after I installed. An upgrade came through and the next thing I noticed is the lock screen going into a "seizure" mode asking for the password but couldn't type anything. I rebooted and came to a non-gui login screen and couldn't get back to the gui. Since I was only a week in, I decided to reimage. After installing I went to search for what happend and found the help channel. Long story short it seems the update removed or disabled the "pop" themes, icons, etc and the fix was simple just to do a apt install of the pop* items...so a snapfu on the update no biggie. Few months later my screen was dark it was unusable. So re-installed again and searched for the issue. Another long story short found it was the video device. Now the current issue is that whenever an update is pushed through you usually get a notice that it is available but now it pops up every second and continues to do that, spamming you to death.

Conclusion: I think pop could be good but I would not recommend it on its update/upgrade ecosystem. Once the pop team gets that solid I think it will be good.

ENGLISH:

"Pop! Os" is a good distribution with the latest NVIDIA GPU drivers and the updated Kernel ... I can not understand why some distributions are ranked # 1 with old updates .... the system is a little greedy in resources, and a little long to start but apart from all that, it does not crash.

For Windows video games, "Pop! Os" will not work better than other distributions, but for internet, online videos, office, normal use of a computer for me it 's OK.

FRANCAIS:
