DistroWatch.com: Porteus

Porteus

Last Update: 2017-08-26 01:22 UTC

Porteus is a fast, portable and modular live CD/USB medium based on Slackware Linux. The distribution started as a community remix of Slax, another Slackware-based live CD, with KDE 3 as the default desktop for the i486 edition and a stripped-down KDE 4 as the desktop environment for the x86_64 flavour. The lightweight LXDE is available as an alternative desktop environment.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

A very good live os, you can use it as a rescue tool or for production, it's the only distribution that works in every desktop/laptop i tried just plug your usb and it run, I had many issues with other distros.
Usb installation is easy, Nvidia/Ati driver can be added as xzm module and you can make your own iso with a desktop manager of your choice (kde/xfce/mate/cinnamon)
the forum is one of the best in linux community.

I wanted quick to start OS with Firefox. This is very quick, allows keeping data in RAM and suspending/sleeping computer. When i selected Copy to RAM boot option, on 2GB RAM setup, then the OS was lagging.
Big downside for me is absence of apt-get , yum as this is slackware. So not so easy to install the things.

Porteus is a good live-boot GNU/Linux operating system with options for saving changes if/when desired. The entire system runs in RAM, off of a CD/DVD-ROM or bootable USB drive. It can also run off of a hard-disk/ssd, but that is not the primary use-case for it.

The Porteus team has an another open-source project called Porteus-Kiosk, which is a secure linux-based OS for Internet kiosks that return to their initial state upon reboot.

Pros: Modular design means it is easy to load and unload applications as needed depending on RAM and what programs you need to have available. There is a package manager called USM to help you install software modules that don't come with Porteus. It is also fairly easy to make your own modules, if you have some background in GNU/Linux. Some script tools and tutorials have been developed by the Porteus team to ease this process.

It is very nice to be able to take a customized bootable OS with you, on a flash drive, wherever you go. I have used Porteus as a rescue tool on other people's computers in this way.

Porteus may also be useful to people wanting to learn about Linux without messing up their PC.

Cons: Porteus is based on Slackware, so the number of available packages is a bit limited. Packages in repositories like Slackware, SlackOnly, Ponce, Alien tend to be a little older and sparser. (There has been talk of re-basing Porteus on another distribution, but consensus seems to be to stick with Slackware for its simplicity.) If you need something more exotic or newer than what is in the standard repositories, you may need to build it yourself. In this case, SlackBuilds.org may be very helpful to you.
