Q4OS is a Debian-based desktop Linux distribution designed to offer classic-style user interface (Trinity) and simple accessories, and to serve stable APIs for complex third-party applications, such as Google Chrome, VirtualBox and development tools. The system is also very useful for virtual cloud environments due to its very low hardware requirements.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Nothing is perfect in life. So Q4OS is not perfect either. Still, my rating is 10 because it is closest to perfect of all distributions I try: it is very stable and fast, blazing fast in comparison to the other Linux distributions I used. As I use a 12 years old Dell PC and a 10 years old Compaq laptop, searching for the maximum speed with only few problems is optimum. Puppy Linux came close for speed, but had so many issues that it was not comfortable to use. Sparky 4.8.1 did also really well, though the newer versions of Sparky all failed to work reliable on both machines. I used Lubuntu too for many years, but working with Q4OS is better. By the way: version 2.7 of Q4OS is the long-term support release, a reason why I will not upgrade to the present release 3.6. Hardware recognition is good.

Now the use of system RAM alone has not proven to be for me as a proper indication for the speed. Almost any Linux version tends to slow down the system as your computer gets very low in physical RAM and gets sluggish. That is why I stick to the 32-bits version of Q4OS since it enables me to use Earlyoom via terminal (leave the terminal window open while using) to keep it fast as possible even with many applications open. I know for many that piece of software causes problems now and then, but I never suffered from that. I dislike the use of the Switch to Kickoff start menu, that is dominant at the screen after booting (Look Switcher). When I switched to the other options, it seemed the links of the menu were not correctly, so I could not start some programs. My advice: keep the preinstalled version. As I disliked the Trinity used file browser, I installed Pcmanfm via Synaptic.
In the past few months I also tried among others the newest versions of Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Zorin, Manjaro, Mint, Puppy (all kinds), MX Linux, Solus, Debian, antiX, Elementary, Slackware, Bodhi.

This is, in my opinion, THE BEST Linux distro for me.

Easy to use, fast and stable. I can make it appear like different Windows versions using XPQ4.

Monitor resolution on some systems don't work and I need to manually setup the resolution.

Sound doesn't always work right after a reboot and I have to use alsa mixer to fix it because the default pulse audio doesn't fix it.

I do use both the stable and testing edition of Q4OS and have been using it for years.

I have tried other distros (more than I can recall/count) and after I found this I won't go back to any others.

My new distro. Just about any desktop. Any option..... or none. Haven't been this excited over a distro in a LONG time.
