Q4OS is a Debian-based desktop Linux distribution offering a choice of a classic-style user interface (Trinity) and a modern desktop environment (KDE Plasma). The project also develops various utilities, such as Desktop Profiler and Software Center, as well as installers for third party applications. In late 2024, Q4OS started offering FreeXP and Free10, two Q4OS variants with Windows-like themes to help users migrate from unsupported Windows versions to Linux.

 I was a longtime user of MX Linux, MX XFCE then MX Fluxbox. However, I see Wayland as the future. So, I tried MX 25 KDE. Although much improved over earlier MX KDE releases, I still had memory issues not found in MX XFCE or MX Fluxbox.

So, I tested other KDE/Wayland distros, 3 based on Debian 13 and one (Ultramarine) based on Fedora 43.

Ultramarine KDE improves upon Fedora KDE but it is just not for me. It has the latest software but I don't really need that. Fedora-based distros tend to be more resource heavy and rely too much on Flatpaks,

Sparky 8 KDE was a total bust ... a regression from version 7. I couldn't even get my wi-fi password to work.

Neptune 9 KDE is quite good. It is a solid German distro running the largely German-managed KDE desktop. Although Neptune pre-installed Kdenlive and Audacity audio production software (which I happen to use), in the end, it was my 2nd choice.

Q4OS 6 is my top KDE choice. It is more resource frugal than any of the other KDE distros and did slightly better running GeekBench 6. By default, Q40S set up the Kate editor the way I like, with a "run as administrator" option (Neptune did not). Q4OS does not add a lot of software bloat. The Q4OS KDE Discovery Software Store includes both native (my preference) and Flatpak installation options. Discovery also handles click-to-install .DEB files well.

Since I much prefer KDE, I am not a fan of Q40S's primary attention to its own throwback TDE (Trinity) desktop. However, this does suggest added attention to resource efficiency more than other Linux distros.

Like all modern KDE distros, Q4OS KDE is exceptionally customizable, has the best theming, can disable an unused trackpad with a simple checkbox, with access to the well-regarded KDE community. Q4OS has its own relatively active community. However, they do seem to cater to TDE users more than KDE users.

I've been a long user of XFCE and various distros: (X)ubuntu, Manjaro, Artix, OpenSuse (Leap & Tumbleweed), Fedora Spin, Archcraft, Antix, and MX Linux. I've been wanting to try Q4OS solely because of its Trinity DE.

Both of Aquarius and Andromeda releases (5.8 and 6.3) are lightweight enough. Its memory usage similar to the XFCE of previous distro I used. In my usual usage, which is usually light unless I open a browser at the same time, Q4OS consumes around 500-800 MB of RAM.

However, there are a few things that I am nitpicking at...

For Aquarius, there are segfaults in TDENetworkManager and Kicker, but it happened very rare and was triggered once by the finished installation of Microsoft Edge update.
Also, it does have Indonesian locale but does not have Indonesian language option. Only Calamares that has it from the start.

For Andromeda, the segfaults above are worse and happen more frequently. I have to switch the stock/TDE network manager app to something else to avoid the crash. And one more problem: frequent segfaults in KDesktop. This happens after my laptop had finished booting and the DE has been loaded. I heard there will be a patch for this in the future though.

Also, the theming looks more uniformly better in Aquarius than in Andromeda.

Nevertheless, I am staying with Aquarius atm, until the segfaults and bugs have been fixed.

 I've been eyeing on this distro for a long time. Trinity looks interesting even tho the UI is not my taste. KDE looks better and customizable like Gnome but I am still worrying about using it.

My old laptop has Celeron N2840 and 2GB RAM (soldered). It's too sluggish to run Windows 10 and Gnome. So I ended up using XFCE (of a few distros) for a while. Latest version of XFCE consumes at least 600 MB of RAM after boot. Turns out Q4OS with Trinity also consumes similar amount of RAM after boot.

I ended up staying in Q4OS for a while. Its smoothness is comparable to Windows 8.1 that my old laptop used to be have. If only there is Systemd-less version...
