Raspbian

Last Update: 2018-11-16 02:20 UTC

Raspbian is a free operating system based on Debian GNU/Linux and optimised for the Raspberry Pi hardware (the armhf processor architecture). Raspbian comes with over 35,000 packages, or pre-compiled software bundled in a nice format for easy installation on a Raspberry Pi. The initial build was completed in June of 2012, but the distribution continues to be active developed with an emphasis on improving the stability and performance of as many Debian packages as possible. Although Debian produces a distribution for the arm architecture, it is compatible only with versions later than the one used on the Raspberry Pi (ARMv7-A CPUs and higher vs the Raspberry Pi's ARMv6 CPU).

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I figured it's about time I commented on Raspberry Pi with Raspbian. I had co-workers and friends recommending Pis for years, for a number of projects. I finally took the plunge earlier this year to get a gaming system for my kids. Wow, really impressed with the Pi and Raspbian. It just works, and it works well. I like the easily changable video memory setting, depending on what you use your Pi for. It really shines running Kodi as Media PC. I use it like a regular PC. I highly recommend a Pi for anyone who's linux shy. Yes, it can be a bit slow for some tasks. I like the fact I can just image a working SD card, and then use it immediately in one of my other Pis. I know have 4, the lates is a 3 B+ model, really wonderul. There are so many great things you can do with a Pi, and Raspbian works well IMHO. I recommend for full Pi experience buying a case, heatsinks and/or fans, SD Card, I like 32Gb...they are cheap, remote keyboard with touch pad (logiteck K400 series), maybe a USB hard drive if you have media you want attached. I've also used stretch for Model Train DCC computer, therre are so many things you can do with the Pi. I also have one mounted to small gaming console, runs off of battery with 4 inch screen (this will be xmas gift for my kids). Overall Raspbian is a good distro, try it on a Pi!

So, I finally took the RPi plunge and just built a box with the intention of streaming video to my TV and playing classic games, and the box cost me about $75 total for the card, memory, and enclosure.
Big high-five to the Raspberry Pi Foundation for making such a powerful and affordable microcomputer.
Another big high-five to the Raspbian team for putting together a distro that feels fully-featured yet still sits lightly on the inexpensive hardware. I've been having a lot of fun with it, and it's barely larger than a deck of cards.
Working with this distro, it reminds me of my first days with Debian Linux and is making me step my game back up a little compared to the distros I've installed since on my desktop and laptop, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing...
Nice work here, all around.
