Robolinux

Last Update: 2018-06-14 14:33 UTC

Robolinux is a user-friendly and intuitive operating system based on the latest long term support release of Ubuntu. One of the project's more interesting features is the availability of a pre-configured virtual machine support pack with Windows XP or Windows 7 - a VirtualBox setup which allows the user to install and run the Windows operating system seamlessly alongside Robolinux. This is an optional add-on that must be downloaded from the project's online store.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

i tried tweeking firefox about config setting to prevent leaks enhance privacy ect only to find lots of settings already changed that i dont know what they do,but not the recomended privacy ones,i find this strange when startpage (privacy based)is the default homepage and cant be changed to say duckduck, such a shame i really liked it but wont trust something that wont even allow me to set something as basic as homepage and settings.

At last, an edition of Robolinux that almost works out of the box. Printers and wi-fi install with little problem. But, as with all Ubuntu 18.04 based distros, wi-fi will not connect without an ethernet cable when in 'live' mode, but is fine after installation.

Shame that some software has not been included at the latest version, e.g. LibreOffice is still at v5. For those who know how, updating using 'add-apt-repository' soon resolves the issue. It would have been nice, as in Ubuntu 18.04, if it was included.

Pros: Generally easy out-of-the-box.
Cons: Up-to-date software should have been provided.

Personally, I prefer Cinnamon over Mate, but that is only my taste.

Good effort, could still do better.

I'm the same reviewer - Gary T. - who reviewed version 8.8.1 lower down in this listing. Since I wrote that the Robo crew have released a new version - 9.1 - and I now feel that I ought to review that too.

Basically I'm pleased as punch! My only whines with the previous major version were that it was impossible to get rid of superfluous drivers in the drivers folder and Robolinux lacked an easily accessible search box. They have now addressed both issues in this new version so it is obvious that the Robolinux people do read these user reviews and ACT on suggestions made for improvements! Hats off to them for that. I appreciate it.

I've been happy to reward them for a great new version with $25. If I was more financially affluent than I am I would happily give more.

The old version is gone and has been replaced with this one. The re-jiggered system menu is reminiscent of Windows 7 or 10 and is easier to navigate. One little touch that I particularly appreciate is the default parking of the recycle bin on the extreme right hand edge of the main panel. This way it's out of your way when you don't need it - I like a clear desktop with not many icons on it - maybe 5 or 6 at most - but easy to access when you do. I don't seriously believe that perfection exists in this world - everything is in a constant state of flux and appears to be evolving towards some distant state of perfection (some metaphysicians would argue that the incessant change is, itself, the perfection) but this is now close to being a perfect OS for me so 9/10 .
