Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Linux user for 11 years, I've tried many distros, including Ubuntu, Mint, Mageia, Zenwalk, Slackware itself, and probably others I forgot. In the end I didn't like any of them too much, since I kept switching. But I've found something to settle on a few years ago, and that's Salix. None of the other distros have the combination of one application per task (great philosophy!), easy live installer, no systemd, light window manager in XFCE. It's the only distro worth using for me now.

After using Slackware for about a year, i decided i wanted to upgrade, but i also felt like i wanted to try something new (feel free to laugh, i am aware that this is a Slackware based distribution). Nevertheless, i chose Salix and it did not dissapoint.
I was and still am very happy with it. It is on par with Slackware, it respects Pats designs and doesn't butcher Slackware in any way. It is as stable as it gets, slapt-get and slapt-src make package management a breeze, it hasn't hitched even once with 5+ days of uptime on my laptop (which i know is not a lot, but it is still excellent). It is fast, responsive, stable and overall just a pleasure to use.

If i could, i would give it an infinite/10 but as it stands, 10/10 will do :) Thank you Salix team for keeping Slackware alive.

I have been using CentOS for many years at work, and other Linux distros at home -no windows at all, oh how many years has it been. I kind of abandoned Slackware a few years ago, because the home computer consumed too much of my time, compared to my office CentOS computer.
I did try Salix in the past, but maybe not for long enough? Now, Salix is under review, again after a while, and it works flawlessly on the home computer. Also, it is fast, and for some reason I tend to like it more than Slackware. My 2.5 years old son cannot login and startx, so his slackware partition rarely boots up.
The home computer now has Slackware, Salix, Slitaz, Antix, Q4OS, Tinycore oh and a few more.
Salix wins for some reason. Slitaz is surprisingly attractive as well, but we are here for Salix.
In fact, I am only anxious for the time I will judge it is time to use Salix in the office, along with CentOS.
Actually, the OS itself shows I can work with it! The team and the future prospect of the distro is the only concern. I wish this project to go well.
CentOS is so good, but I hate to be trapped into one and only nest. I like flying around. That's what Linux is after all. Salix, is really so good, I wonder why I did not stick to it the last time I tried it, ok it's been a long time probably, maybe their first release? Not sure.
Congratulations to the team and my best wishes for this project to flourish. It's worth it.
If you decide to try it, be prepared to stick to it. A 1-year trial is a must.
