It's works really well as standalone machines. The feedback from teacher are that they really appreciate the straight forward start menu with standard office application, videoplayer and browser. They also use the educational applications in different classes, relevant for different curriculum. What's really nice, is that such machines no longer supported by newest Windows version, really works nice on the latest Debian Edu. This doubles the lifetime the laptops can be used from 6-7 years to 10-14 years. Was this review helpful? Yes No Version: 12.0.0 Rating: 10 Date: 2024-03-29 Votes: 5 Now, even Debian Edu can be used effectively on Chromebooks with as little as 16GB hard drive. By rather using the file system btrfs with standard compression rather than ext4, the system takes up less than 8 GB of space on the eMMC SSD. This means that 7 GB hard drive is free. You can also use zRAM for swap, which uses RAM more efficiently. Performance with KDE installed on 5-6 year old Chromebooks is impeccable. Note You must remember to unlock the bootloader and enter a new and open boot system. There is a little extra work here. Was this review helpful? Yes No Version: 12.0.0 Rating: 10 Date: 2024-03-02 Votes: 8 Running Debian Edu with KDE as the default desktop environment works like a charm on 5-15 year old used laptops. Remember as mentioned in another review here to have at least a dual core processor, 2-4GB RAM and at least a 60GB hard drive. KDE is light weight, have similarities with other operating systems. The kiosk mode that is supported in KDE transforms any computer to the ultimate open school book, preventing learning to be locked down behind walls of passwords. The kiosk mode is popular among teachers in Ukraine as they can focus solely on learning and not managing hundreds of passwords. As someone put it after testing Debian Edu on a 10 year old computer with a mechanical hard drive: "Now I've been fumbling around a bit with Debian Edu/Skolelinux, easy to use and the only negative I've found is that it takes a little extra time to open the program, but that may have something to do with the machine.
