Slackware Linux

Last Update: 2025-06-18 17:20 UTC

The Official Release of Slackware Linux by Patrick Volkerding is an advanced Linux operating system, designed with the twin goals of ease of use and stability as top priorities. Including the latest popular software while retaining a sense of tradition, providing simplicity and ease of use alongside flexibility and power, Slackware brings the best of all worlds to the table. Originally developed by Linus Torvalds in 1991, the UNIX-like Linux operating system now benefits from the contributions of millions of users and developers around the world. Slackware Linux provides new and experienced users alike with a fully-featured system, equipped to serve in any capacity from desktop workstation to machine-room server. Web, ftp, and email servers are ready to go out of the box, as are a wide selection of popular desktop environments. A full range of development tools, editors, and current libraries is included for users who wish to develop or compile additional software.

Popularity (hits per day): 12 months: 38 (233), 6 months: 42 (247), 3 months: 49 (245), 4 weeks: 50 (240), 1 week: 54 (218)

Average visitor rating: 9.11/10 from 128 review(s).

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I use Slack for many years now. I do professional coding, web design and video editing and I am a professional musician doing recording and audio editing. All is done on Slackware. Although Slack is not known as a multimedia distro, I never had a problem installing the necessary software for content creation. I use OBS, Blender, Inkscape, Ardour, Jack, Pipewire and Carla, to name a few..

Gaming? Sure. Limited only by hardware and general Linux compability.

Despite it's reputation of beeing hard or dated, it's way easier to install and maintain than, let's say Mint. And my desktop looks as polished as any flashy distro's desktop.

Pros
Absolute stable and fast. The few crashes I ever had, were caused by hardware issues.
All packages are from vanilla source without branding or "improvements"
I don't mind systemd, but I greatly prefer Slack's BSD-Init. Simple, elegant, fast.
Runs fast even on older hardware.
Even if you go -current, you hardly ever run into problems.

Cons
Multilib support and some more recent software versions are maintained outside of official Slackwar and things are not always in sync.
The number of available packages is rather small. There is slackbuilds.org, but often you have to look elsewhere. But iif you find a.deb of your desired software, chances are high you can install iit.
Slackware is probably not wery attractive to new users, because it looks dated or daunting.

I tried many distros, but always come back to Slackware. It's simply the best.

Many thanks to Partick and his team. And many thanks to AlienBOB for jis slackbuilds and his multilib support.

Been using this distro since the 2.x days. Always been my go to for a fresh install and setting up stable machines on older equipment. Back then you compiled as you installed, lots of time spent watching stuff get compiled for the specific machine you were using. Like most say, you either KNOW Linux or will learn it as you use this distro. Other distros have lots of eye candy and easy to use stuff, but nothing beats the stability of Slackware. Once configured properly, there are no better distros out there.

Patrick and company, keep up the good work.

To be perfectly honest, Slackware is boring. And I mean this in the best possible way. I don't like surprises from my OS, in the form of crashes, freezes, randomly changing settings, package managers that produce unexpected results, and so forth. Slackware is the only distro that has always delivered exactly what I ask of it, nothing more and nothing less. No drama. Boring.

Once I set up my Slackware environment the way I want it, I get a smooth and consistent experience, every time. If you want a little more excitement in your life (but not much, really), try Slackware -current.

Stability aside, how about Plasma 5 running at sub-500MB RAM usage at boot? Some distros can't even achieve this with XFCE. And the speed and responsiveness is there as well.

I am an average user whose computer usage consists mainly of browsing, email, listening to music, creating text documents, page layout/graphic design, and spreadsheets. I don't code or otherwise work in the computer sciences. I do use the terminal/command line quite a bit, sometimes compile software from source, and have done some limited scripting, all of which I have learned as a Slackware user.

Every time I venture forth to try other distros to see what I might be missing, I am sorely disappointed. I have a ThinkPad that I reserve for this sort of testing, widely considered to be one of the most Linux-friendly laptops around. Although things often start out well with other distros, they always seem to deteriorate sooner or later.

So if you want a completely boring Linux experience, free of drama, frustration, and head scratching, please do consider Slackware. It's the oldest surviving Linux distro for good reason. Thank you Patrick Volkerding and team!
