Solus is a Linux distribution built from scratch. It uses a forked version of the PiSi package manager, maintained as "eopkg" within Solus, and its flagship edition uses the Budgie desktop environment. Budgie was originally developed-in-house, but is now maintained as a separate project by the Buddies of Budgie team. Solus is also available in Plasma, Xfce, and GNOME editions. The distribution is available for 64-bit computers only.

This distribution looks like you've walked into a repair garage. The installation is okay so far but the problems quickly start to mount. Slow update servers, broken packages or the update freezes completely and the system comes to a standstill. Restarting several times didn't help because these serious errors are reported each time. It looks like the rolling release has hardly any control and everything is just pushed in because many programs simply don't start and the errors are only displayed in the console. It's better to go back to the well-known and solid distributions a la old school.

Solus is a hidden gem in the world of rolling distros. It is a curated distro that is rolling in a way that they generally update once a week, outside of security patches for apps. This allows for a more stable environment. The team is very active in the community and is easy to work with if there are issues. The other great thing is that it is an efficient install and does not have a lot of bloat, even with desktop environments like KDE and Gnome. It has truly become one of my favorite distros.

Solus's curated rollouts are pretty underlooked in a landscape of distros that are either stable dinosaurs or constantly bleeding. There is one minor downside to Solus - while there are a lot of packages, there are a few missing that I end up having to install myself. For some packages it's no problem, for others I am not quite competent enough on a systems level to get it all set up.

Overall, with a lot of distros out there that are just derivatives with new wallpaper, Solus' goal is admirable: a general use distro for people who want weekly conservative updates. Hold off on Budgie until they replace the screensaver, budgie screensaver is built on the archaic and busted xscreensaver, and if you have a laptop you'll find yourself having to restart lightdm after resume OFTEN.
