Synex

Last Update: 2025-10-09 11:01 UTC

Synex is a GNU/Linux distribution based on Debian's "Stable" branch, developed with the official Debian Live Build tool. It offers four separate desktop options with GNOME, LXDE, KDE Plasma and Xfce, all of which are composed of a rather frugal set of applications in its default state, without any development tools or offices suites. Some of the distribution's main features include Calamares installer with support for both BIOS and UEFI, CUPS integration for printing and network support, out-of-the box support for Flatpak applications, official NVIDIA driver installation assistant with support for both X11 and Wayland, and additional repositories containing Microsoft Edge, OnlyOffice and Zabbix.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Synex is exactly what it promises: polished Debian without unnecessary bloatware.

If you're expecting preinstalled office suites or development tools out of the box, this isn't for you—and that's fine. This distro is built for users who want full control without the noise.

What stands out in Desktop: genuinely improved performance over vanilla Debian, solutions to recurring issues (fonts, integrated NVIDIA drivers), and thoughtful details like configuration propagation to newly created users.

**What's coming with Synex Server and ServerHub sounds spectacular.** A TUI tool that will automate enterprise deployments in minutes: LAMP, Docker, Nginx Proxy Manager, Nextcloud, Zabbix, GLPI, Odoo. No manual configs, no human error. Full audit trails, automatic dependency resolution, securely generated credentials. Exactly what sysadmins, MSPs, and SMBs need for consistency and reproducibility.

Solid foundation, no nonsense. Synex Desktop for clean work, Synex Server as a future tool. Recommended.

In have beef with this one.

It says “Focus on what matters: Solid foundation, simple experience: designed for businesses and users who want to work without distractions”. As well as: “About Synex
Synex is an innovative Linux distribution crafted in Argentina, built on the robust foundation of Debian. Our mission is to deliver a minimalist and stable operating system that caters to the needs of small and medium-sized businesses, as well as individual users seeking a straightforward computing experience. We prioritize simplicity without compromising on performance, ensuring that our users can focus on what truly matters.”

Right, I installed Debian and Synex side-by-side. Synex had an “install” option that took you to the live cd, where Debian had a true installer plus a live install. Once installed, the only difference I could find is that Synex removed some applications. What made it “business ready?” There were no “business” applications? No short-cuts to set up LDAP, or a server or an accounting or invoicing program. Maybe it has an office suite with excel or calc? Not even. Maybe they have documentation on this? (***Checks website***) Nope, installation guide only. Then what was the point?

Vanilla Debian and Synex even booted the same speed. I gave it a 4 as it had no issues and installed fine on old hardware and virtualbox. I should rate it 1 for the lack of anything "business" that it sells itself as. There is no reason to install this, unless you don't want an office package with a Debian install.

I even tried the LXDE version, but there was benefit there either.

I use a laptop Lenovo-B5400 "ancient" with Intel proccesor I3 4th gen. and mem 8gb.Usualy i'm using Debian or Debian based distro.Ive installed Synex as soon as i saw that is Debian based. The Install was normal, fast without any bugs. This distro is no bloatware and its performance is absolutely light and run flawless. There are many distro based on Debian but a little number of they be maintenanced and discontinued eventualy.Wish for this fork dont. Many thanks to dev's of Argentina for this project.
