ToriOS

Last Update: 2018-09-17 02:05 UTC

ToriOS is a Debian-based distribution which is designed to work on older computers, even 32-bit machines which do not support running PAE-enabled kernels. ToriOS strives to maintain the KISS principle and uses JWM to provide a lightweight graphical user interface.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

As one who still wants to see development for older computer gear...ToriOs appears to be an option that is more full featured than something like puppy, tiny core, dsl, or slitaz. I personally have never ran across this particular installer and found it to be pretty simplistic. The default wm is not something I'd want to live in but I can could deal with it for sure.

Hopefully this project will continue

Installed version 1.0 on Compaq Armada E500. Pentium III and about 400MB RAM, new 40GB IDE HDD. Install was effortless via livedisk and then 'one button install'. Quite responsive too, though not yet added a lot of software.

Not a great fan of the visual theme, but given the age of the hardware (released around 2001) the actual performance, which is what I am interested in, is terrific. These machines were designed with Win 2000 and then xp in mind and a lot of more recent distros cannot be used on non-PAE hardware, meaning you're stuck with an insecure OS.

ToriOS fixes that, and the install was dead easy. I admit, I just toasted the whole HDD, so I did not need to worry about partitioning or sharing with another OS, but the computer is usable when before it was not.

I really liked the system, especially for its lightness and speed, but it would be very useful a 64-bit version to have the possibility to install more application, I know the system was developed for old computers, but I liked it too much and wanted to use as standard system from my 64 bit computer.
