I switched from Windows to Linux a few years ago and began with ZorinOS. After several months on that, I switched to Linux Mint and stayed put for about a year. Both Zorin and Mint provide a Desktop Environment (DE) that are more intuitive for a Windows user. I think both those (and especially Kubuntu!), are solid options for those making the switch from Windows. What made me switch to Ubuntu with the GNOME DE was Mint just felt too outdated. I felt like I was using something between Windows XP and Windows 7 (both of which were good systems for their time). Also, Wayland provides some security enhancements and doesn't conflict with most of the software or hardware I use. I tried a ton of distros (several Fedora and Debian flavors, Deepin, Q4OS, KDE Neon, AnduinOS, EndeavorOS, openSUSE, etc.) and landed with Ubuntu for several reasons: -There was no CLI learning curve switching from Mint/Zorin to Ubuntu. -Ubuntu is run by a large team of employees that stay on top of security updates and bug fixes. -All my hardware works well with Ubuntu (I occasionally had printing issues with Mint). -All the software I've gotten used to using is available in Ubuntu (Fedora was often a pain to wrestle with). -The ability to switch back and forth between Xorg and Wayland in seconds with 24.04. -Upgrading to Pro was free and gives me security updates until 2034, which means I can stick with what works until I eventually buy a new, updated computer someday. Ubuntu gets a lot of hate, but I've found it to be a good, reliable OS. Snaps also get a lot of hate, but with my fast, modern processor, I don't have any issues with delays in starting apps. I timed app launches in both Mint and Ubuntu and couldn't see any noticable difference. My biggest criticism of standard Ubuntu would be the DE, GNOME. It's is a bit heavier on system resources than Mint's Cinnamon, but I've got 16 GB of RAM, so that's not a big deal. Even 8 GB would be more than sufficient to run GNOME. Also, GNOME's philosophy and heavy-handed ways may eventually move me to Kubuntu with Plasma. With every new release of GNOME, the DE becomes more locked down and less capable of customizing. But I've got until 2034 before I *HAVE* to switch, so there's no hurry. Lastly, if you go with Ubuntu, I'd recommend visiting FlatHub's website and installing that so you get access to Flatpaks. That'll greatly increase your software availability, and you can get away from Snaps if you don't like them. Was this review helpful? Yes No Version: 25.10 Rating: 10 Date: 2026-02-09 Country: Canada Votes: 5 I'm a longtime Ubuntu 24.04 LTS user. I bought a Dell Latitude 5430 from Dell Refurbished in January. Beautiful little laptop with a decent fast processor and 32 GB of RAM. After spending HOURS getting Windows 11 PRO configured and running on it (it came pre-installed), I installed Ubuntu 25.10 desktop. It took 10 minutes to install and reboot and was fully usable! All of the hardware worked, with the exception of the Broadcom fingerprint reader. Once I found a driver for it, I had to compile and install it, and now it works. That's the only thing that didn't work on the first boot. 25.10 is solid and stable. I've been using it more than a month now, and except for installing fprint and drivers, everything worked right away, no problems, and this thing boots in about 5 seconds. I'm psyched! Yes No Version: 25.10 Rating: 9 Date: 2026-02-06 Votes: 4 I've been distrohopping for about two years and I've never given Ubuntu a chance because of all the bad things people say about it. The thing is, I thought 24.04 was too outdated, but after using Arch and Fedora and seeing how a work environment could be destroyed by an update, forcing me to revert to backups, I lost interest and ended up going back to Windows. A few weeks ago, I gave version 25.10 a try, and it's not even close to changing my mind. It's a very stable distribution for not being an LTS, it comes with a lot of software updated to the most stable version possible, and I have zero incompatibilities. Games work just as well as they do on Windows, and despite having Wayland by default, it feels great. It's incredible how much it has improved, and I'm really looking forward to version 26.04 LTS. For now, I'll stick with this one since it works incredibly well for me. I haven't had any problems with snaps since I removed them and left the native apt alongside flatpak. Seriously, Canonical, you've won me over! I'll also keep the dual boot just in case, but it looks like I'll end up with only Linux. Was this review helpful?
