Everything just works, it is something that you don't have to worry about after installation... There is a rich system of packages for all kinds of applications. If you prefer a pure gnome-session instead of the ubuntu-session (which is basically a custom gnome-session), you easily can add that, it is a one liner in the terminal. If you don't like snap you can use flatpak instead. This is a strong and stable distro, which is widely used. I started at the beginning with Debian and Fedora, which are great distros. But I realized that I don't want to do a lot of configuration, just a stable, long supported, distro that just works ...thumbs up to ubuntu! Was this review helpful? Like many, this was the first distribution I ever used coming from Mac. It being so popular made it easy to find tips online for how to do things. Unfortunately, I quickly realized that most of the time the advice was outdated and not from official documentation (Ubuntu is a little lacking in documentation, or at least I could never find what I needed). But in reality, I didn't need the documentation all that much given that most things just worked out of the box. If you like the experience that Ubuntu gives you out of the box then there is no problem with it really. The exception I would say would be snaps. At the time I was using Ubuntu, snaps had some bugs with my device. The Firefox snap didn't support smooth scrolling with my touch screen, and once I figured how to install the .deb (much harder than it should have been because it seems that they want you to use their snaps) all the problems were solved. Ubuntu has a good release schedule, arguably one of the best (without going rolling). They are more up to date than Debian, and give options to jump ahead for more up-to-date packages outside of LTS releases. But the package manager would occasionally not update packages for reasons that at the time I could not understand (quite possibly a skill issue). Overall, Ubuntu is good. I no longer use it due to wanting to go outside the bounds of what they provide (they don't make it all that easy to change what they give you like their desktop environment tweaks). But I still recommend it to those who just want to use a desktop distro out of the box. Was this review helpful? Back in 2005, when Ubuntu 5.04 (Hoary Hedgehog) and 5.10 (Breezy Badger) were the new kids on the block, it felt like the "Linux for Human Beings" promise finally became a reality. The revolution that Ubuntu sparked shifted the entire landscape of open-source software by focusing on three main pillars: 1. The "ShipIt" Program One of the most radical moves was Canonical mailing out free installation CDs to anyone in the world, regardless of their location. For those with slow 2005-era dial-up, this was the first time they could actually get their hands on a modern OS without a week-long download. 2. The Death of "Dependency Hell" While Debian had the foundation, Ubuntu popularized the APT (Advanced Package Tool) system for the masses. Suddenly, installing software wasn't a nightmare of compiling source code or hunting for missing .so files; it was just a simple command or a click in the Synaptic Package Manager. 3. Hardware that "Just Worked" In 2005, getting Wi-Fi or sound to work on Linux usually required a blood sacrifice and editing xorg.conf for hours. Ubuntu pushed for better driver support and a graphical interface that didn't require a Computer Science degree to navigate (though it certainly inspired many to get one!). Was this review helpful?
